I read a piece very recently about a replacement starter gear. Now mine is playing up and getting worse buy the day I wanted to get hold of one and fit it asap. I can't find the thread and wondered if it has been removed. Any idea?. and any advise on fitting it would be great. thanks. Baz.

I did mine a couple of months ago, starter motor out, which meant moving the fuel rail out of the way (4.5) to get enough space to lift motor out. As for the gear assembly itself, undo the little cover/plate over the gear, undo the screws holding it in, remove, put new gear in with new grease ( I used some high temp, high pressure white stuff from work) screw back up, I used threadlock on the screws because if they fall out they go straight into your clutch. Starter motor back into car, sorted.
Just make sure you disconnect your battery first! I didnt and burnt myself.

I did mine (4.5) & didn't need to remove fuel rail. Just took off passenger-side airbox & pipes. There's room enough to get the thing out & back in, but it is a pain with all the wiring & pipes that are in the way at the back of the engine.

Sorry for jumping in but was wondering what this new gear fixes?

Mine starts fine from cold, but when hot the starter motor screeches a litte and struggles to start the car, will this sort the problem or is it a complete new starter needed?

Many Thanks
Malc

malc grn,

The 'gear' being discussed is a clutch arrangement designed to protect the

starter motor if the vehicle is either started in gear or if the engine timing is too far

advanced causing it to attempt to run backwards.Because the Cerb starter gets so hot,

expansion of this clutch coupled with some wear causes it to slip giving the noise

described.

The solenoid suffers from heat as well and needs a couple of thou machining off the

moving contact plunger to prevent it sticking.

Yeah sounds like its your solenoid that is sticking when its warm due to expansion.
