I have 2 gearboxes - a knackered T5 in the car with bad backlash and a good T5 in the gargae that has worn synchromesh on 5th - otherwise its perfect

my question is - is it easy for a numpty like me to take the spare one apart and fix the synchromesh or is it quite complicated? ie will i get it wrong and end up paying someone to take it back out of the car again and fix it again and then put it back in?

I reckon you could do the syncho on 5th ok, it hangs of the back of the main box so not massively involved. Still a 4 spanner on the old Haynes book I'd say.

There are rebuild manuals available for the T5, I'm sure one of the Tuscan racers must have a copy they'd lend you.

This is what we need: Click

T5's are pretty striaghtfoward to strip down, the only thing is you'll need a modifed bearing splitter to get the taper roller off the front input shaft, but you should be able to replace the synchro rings without removing this.

A hydraulic press with some lengths of tube will also help.

While you've got the box aprt I'd strongly reccommend just taking the corners off the selector gates on for the gear shift , this greatly increases the slickness of the shift

I have a couple of PDF documents.
Not sure where I down loaded them from though.

One is the T5 Service manual. 79 pages!

The other is a T5 rebuild 22 pages with photo's that someone posted up on the web.

They are both just over 2 meg each.

Do you have these??

If anybody wants a copy, just email me and I'll send them back.

Tim,

did you have a weekend in mind? Ali and the kids could come with you - ours are off for nearly 8 weeks now - we have a heated swimming pool, large beer fridge and lots of things for young kids to do especially in the summer (perhaps not the beer fridge for them though)

speak tomorrow

cheers

Sounds like a plan m8. biggrin

We need to assemble info' and the tools we need. Will find out about the bearing slitter.

Have you thought about changing the cogs around? You only need top end for Goodwood and you don't like that so maybe build a 'sprint' box? Been on my mind for a while, gives you more options that a simple diff change. wink

I'm still reeling from the fact that I've just agreed to work full time in London for 10 weeks!!! What was I thinking?

That's brilliant thanks Steve, this is what this forum is all about, you're a star!

All received and opened, what's really worrying is that it looks like a lot of fun! Am I sad? wink

Not sad!! Its the Engineer in you.

Good luck, as I've not done a gearbox myself for a very long time!

But will be attacking the front bushes soon and I know I'm going to need advice with what goes where with them!!

A sprint close ratio and ideally a quick shift box would be a bloody good idea.

I will obviously need a new syncho cog i wonder what else will have to be changed?

My thoughts would be 'fix' your knackered box and rebuild your 'standard' box. But you may think differently?

That way I can cut my teeth on yours before I do mine. wink

Just a quick not on quick shift Jes, When i spoke to Bernie at CTS about this he told me that if you fit a quickshift to the T5 you will be changing to quick for the syncros. He sid it wouldnt last very long at all.

the splitter is like this:

http://www.manchestertools.co.uk/neilsen-gear-pull...

but on most standard ones the rear face is too thick to get behind the bearing on the T5 so you have to machine it down to 3mm or so.

If you want to speed up the shift then knocking the corners off the gates helps greatly.
