Hello folks, just popped over from the S forum. Unfortunatly my car needs a body off rebuild and will be begining this in due time (possibly this winter). But I do not want to rush it and I will need a toy, a new toy to play with as I think about stipping down and welding up the chassis of the S3 and reassembling the whole thing.

So that's where the prospect of owning two TVRs comes in. I thought about a Chimaera as I do the S up, buy they are to me too alike the S. I therefore I thought about a Cerbera as the new TVR.

I'd like a AJP engined car, between 11k-15k there seem to be some good ones in the classifides at the momennt. I am aware of the running costs involved but can much myself. I think also I will go on an advance driving course thing.

Your thoughts chaps....

You want to buy a cerb to be a daily driver just for winter?

:/

Get a hack that you can whap S parts in the boot of to take to platers/painters. It will make your life so much easier!

If you can insure it then why not. As for winter driving, clean the chassis down and then cover the underside in waxoil, I drove my Tuscan in the snow and it was much better behaved than my BMW 330.

Yep have to agree a Cerb as an additional toy whilst trying to refurb an S is a bit much.

Save the money and put it into the resto. Buy another cheaper RWD for the money. Imagine having a crank or clutch go on you and trying to fix that as well as fixing up the S.

Unless your lucky you'll spend more time keeping the cerb on the road than restoring the S

I am well aware on average they can cost 3k per year. My money goes up in september (I live at home - okay that's another point, I could get into property but lets not go down that road...).

My point is that I fancy an upgrade anyway, but I can't sell the S as it is. A body off refurb will not cost the earth, it's just time. The Cerbera however will cost money in the long term, but I always think they would really compliment each other. I also think every TVR enthusiast or even geniune performance car enthusiast should own at some point.

To avoid the crank going, I could always stretch to a 4.5. There is one 98 4.5 with 400bhp which looks quite sound for 13.5k. But then again it may be too much. I'm more concerned about the stress it could bring but the good points is having two amazing yet totally different TVRs. Difficult.

PS - No I wouldn't run a Cerb over winter. Not everyday at least. I'm looking to buy a Cerb in March when I actually turn 21, or even just before when the market is low over the winter period. I would have a daily hack also.

I'm 21 with a 4.2. DO IT, how many 55year olds do you see in 911turbos' etc. does that look good *cough Cough* MID-LIFE crisis! If you know how to drive and will be sensible then i'd recommened it, i reckon i'm in about the same boat as you with still stayin at home. Treat it with respect. The way i see it is; I'm still staying at home therefore i can afford to run it, insure it and love it. If anything goes wrong(which it has) then it might cost a bit but it's unlikely to depreciate much, if at all.

Sure I could have bought an '09 plate 1.2 corsa.... and it's be pennies to run and "sensible". But in 2 years i'll have lost £4.5k in depreciation alone.

Good luck

Indeed it's your money and you can spend it as you want. People here are just giving you opinions on the question you asked from a real world ownership point of view.

Everyone likes the idea of a cheap Cerb etc but I really don't think there ever is.

I got mine VERY cheap 4 years ago and knew it need some work. Adding it up and doing ALL the work myself even with no major issues (bar 3rd gear exploding) has cost me about £1k a year in repairs and servicing just to keep it on the road, on top of your usual costs.

If it were me I'd sort the S out, sell it and then look at a Cerb.

Believe me if you can get on the property ladder now then do it. I'd love to have been able to buy when the prices are this low.

However, I'm always looking on ebay for cheap classic TVR's to buy and currently run 3 cars so I'm in no position to comment. laugh
