This year's Fighting Torque...
Discussion
Why is this event not being heralded with the fanfare it deserves?
I got an innocuous E-mail a couple of weeks ago, so I entered immediately (thinking space would be at a premium and time of the essence), but a quick look at the entry list with only three short weeks to go shows only 28 competitors...
A further look shows not a single piece of advertising on any forum within Pistonheads - not a single word!
I know last years event was almost ruined by the stubborn exclusion of most modified cars, until a couple of weeks before when they realised they weren't going to get the desired turnout of standard Supercars, so one would have thought they would have tried a bit harder this year - however...
I also realise Windsor (Longbow) who masterminded the original event (
) is nothing to do with this years happenings (that plum goes to Javelin(tm)), but since it was a Cerbera based event en originalis, I thought this would be a good place to start generating awareness.
Get those entries in Guys!
Then get over to the Ferrari forum and start baiting...
...for all the good it will do...

Del, just email them direct, I am sure you'll be accepted.
I agree with Nelly it's been very low key this year and that may be on the back of people being a bit miffed that the timing/distance wasn't that accurate (me included). However, this year I am going along just to be part of the fun and to compare how my car fares against the others, and if the timing gear etc is A1 then it's a bonus.
Look forward to seeing the usual suspects there as well as some newbies.
Brummie, the event would suit your car to a tee.
Jules.

No, Brummie isn't registered - only 40 cars have entered in total. I'd say 75% are modified, with many in the 500-600hp bracket.
As always, I'm quietly confident my Cerb will do me proud
But against modified cars its a pretty meaningless test - just a bit of fun!
Shame I was intending coming (again) but I always seem to have the car in the garage at the wrong times As always, I'm quietly confident my Cerb will do me proud

.What speed do you hope to achieve windsor, I'll reserve the 175mph guess......
Maybe I am wrong, but Fighting Torque was a super event the first time round, longbow did us cerbie owners proud, and we had a couple of real supercars turn up too for laughs.
It should have stayed TVR focused with other supers as guests. As of yet we still dont have an annual high-speed event centrally focused around TVR owners.
The TVR drag race day also didnt happen again after the first time.
The Cream event only happened the once too....
And as far as I know, all these original events had an amazing turnout!!! so why not carry the theme on???? I can appreciate the amount of work and effort which goes into these events, as I was one of the staff behind the Cream event... but still... wheres the love???
You know what... I'm gonna chat to a few like minded TVR owners and see if we can start something that will be a high performance shootout day for all including things to do for kids etc... at least twice a year.... tuner shootouts are best... friendly competition and keeps the newly invented upgrades coming too...
if it wasnt for the shootout events, we would have never had the Joolz whirlwind upgrade and all the ecu mods etc.... we need to keep the blood boiling...!!!

I agree, it is a shame when a good event fizzles out. The first FT was so much fun - a real blend of high performance cars such as AMGs, Nobles, Porsche Turbos/GT3, Lambos etc etc. The event in 2008 was mired by problems with the timing kit - which when that is the main focus of the day - to run a timed standing mile - was a big let down for many. This year, the event hasn't been publicised and therefore the entries are much lower. Since I am not formally involved in organising this event, I don't really want to plug it on PH in case people are dissastisfied and look to me for answers, a bit like last year.
The concept of FT is still great I think, and totally unique in the UK. It is a 1 mile drag race between 2 cars, side by side from the lights. Even at places like VMAX and Straighliners, they only run cars in a staggered fashion. But my original aim was to provide a massive benchmarking test - just like the Clarkson video - in order to see how fairly standard high performance cars stack up against each other in the real world, outside of the realm of the press journos.
Harry, I was at Woodbridge a few months ago with staightliners and did timed 1 and 1.5 mile runs. My best run over the mile was at 166mph and over the 1.5 miles was 172mph - that was with a 10mph headwind. The weather forecast for tomorrow looks like it will be a 15mph tailwind so I shouldimprove on these times. I was really happy with the times though, as in comparison it was faster (just) than a stock 1998 Viper GTS ACR's best times and also faster than a remapped SL55 AMG. So in terms of punching above its weight - it proved my little 4.2 is still up there.
I will be very curious to see how the new Nissaan GT-R goes though

I'm not sure how other people felt, but last year's event started with "We only want Two Cerberas, of each model"
After it was originally A "Cerbera Versus" event, I sought of thought "f
k em" & didn't put my name down or pay much attention to it.
However, I'm a shallow b
d, and because they've emailed me an invitation, me, the missus & Old Bluey (Not Viagra) are heading off to our overnight hotel in a couple of hours

Afraid that was how it came across to me. No chance I was going to get in as my car isn't standard looking so just forgot about the event all together. Shame really as the price doesn't seem too bad although it gives no indications of how many runs you get. After it was originally A "Cerbera Versus" event, I sought of thought "f

To be honest Longbow - your launch times takesome beating. I've no idea how you managed it so quickly.
But against modified cars its a pretty meaningless test - just a bit of fun!The original FT was Cerbera Vs the rest just to see if we could repeat the top gear run. Things moved on and there were a few cars that were better, but many more that were embarrassed.
Just a shame the format has changed.
there's a few TVR pics here:

Thanks for the link to the piccys
Was A great day, Thanks to Javelin for organising it & also Longbow, for inspiring it.
Beautiful day, and my pasty skin has got a slightly better look to it.
The old Cerby did me proud.
Started off against an RX7. I'd have fancied the Cerb against everything there for the first 100M, as the big power cars, couldn't get traction, or in other cases, traction control was holding them back.
Alas, the RX7 came sailing past me, but I think it's over 600 brake at the wheels, so It was probably closer than I deserved to be.
Had good victory's against the Astra VXR, which launched brilliantly. The Chim, Z3M & one of the Griffs.
For me, the best scalp of the day, was the E55AMG, with over 550 bhp & 610lb. I stormed away off the line, but he was reeling me in as we approached the finish, so his terminal will be better. But still pleased with that one.
I also got beat by the 4.5 Cerb. I was away first, but I held 3rd to long & he came past. However I started reeling him back in, so my terminal will be better on that one. Good match/race, and I reckon I could get a victory against that one, if we'd had a rematch (rematches
)
A victory against Nelly's Tuscan S followed. I got another good launch & held the lead from there on in. Really nice guy & great CCTV set up on the car.
Also beat the two, Standard ,cough, Griffs. Del was claiming a missed gear in the first run. And in the rematch, he was moaning on the line about the heat. I suggested he turned the air con on, but was greeted with a one fingered reply
. Bloody Cerb, was freezing inside
. Del's Griff was creeping up on me at the end, so pretty sure that extra torque gave him better terminals. On the way back, we did his torque test, where we selected any gear at low revs & floored it. Hammered me every time, I'd imagine it to be A very 'usable' car, where in the Cerb, you need to scramble about for the right gear.
Really pleased with the car, 500 mile round trip & about 15 runs.
Not many cars there, but in a selfish way, it made it better as there were occasions when you could finish your run & line straight back up on the start.
1/4 miles, were around the 12.7 mark. Mile was a shade under 32 seconds. Terminals were 159.91 mph, quite consistent there, as they were all 159.**
Sorry if I've bored you all, roll on next year's event

It was a good day - the weather was nigh on perfect (again!) and some of those cars were awesome!
The couple of runs that the MG SV did were amazing, and the Viper was
Just a shame there were so few cars, and of those that did turn up, how many dropped out with problems after just one or two runs.
Ironic that Windsor was the only TVR casualty with a cracked exhaust manifold - bad luck mate
As always, the atmosphere was fantastic. It's so nice to attend a meeting with such friendly company - cheers guys.
My only gripes were the somewhat pointless (IMHO) noise regs (bearing in mind it's on an active airbase in the middle of nowhere...
), and the fact that the timing gear spent much of the day refusing to work!
Anyhow - some Vids:-
Del's Griff...
Tim's Griff...
David's Cerb (I think...)
I haven't added our run yet Russ - I'll do it later...
