Hi all

I have taken my starter off the car as it was starting to struggle during hot starting, so am I right in thinking it could be the gearing as it sometimes makes a screech?

Is there any way to check this as I have taken it off the starter and can't see anything obviously wrong with it.

Could the windings in the motor be cooked?

I'm not sure weather to replace the gear or replace the starter!!

What's recommended with regards to starters, new or recon and from who?

Any advice much appreciated

If its struggling when hot it'll probably be the solenoid that is causing difficulty in starting, people have taken it out and slightly rubbed it with emery cloth just to reduce the size of the piston to stop it jamming when it expands due to the heat

Mine was screeching, not when hot but all the time, this was the 'clutch' in the gear assembly slipping as it was shot. £50 for a new gear, problem sorted.

I had the same issue and we thought it was the starter. Turns out if was a bad earth to the chassis.

Well after having the starter in and out a couple of times it's finally given up completely and now the clutch on the starter is continously slipping.
So I am just waiting for the courier to bring me the new starter gear from classic-car-world.co.uk.

I thought it may be of interest that when he called his supplier to check on stock levels, his supplier said he was just about to start supplying new solenoids for the starters and is possibly gonna start a refurb service.
The only thing that can't be refurbed is damaged armatures, as no supply, so new starter only in those instances.
He will post details on here once it's all sorted out.

Cheers

There is no "clutch" on these starters as such.

The screeching is caused by the pinion falling off the end of the Bendix screw or the teeth bouncing off the flywheel before engaging.

CCW are the best source for the parts as the main supplier to them only supply the parts in kit form and their more expensive to us general public.

I thought there was some sort of clutch thing in the gear assembly that is designed to slip if the starter gear doesn't disengage from the flywheel when the engine starts? As this wears out it slips at a lower torque than is required to turn the engine over???

Yes it has, when I took the starter off I could turn the toothed wheel in both directions by hand, the new one will only go one way.

New one fitted now and working a treat

I smashed apart the old one to see how it works, it has metal rollers that clamp onto the hardnend steel shaft in one direction and when you turn it the other way the rollers are pushed against springs and this allows the shaft to slip, I can see why once it starts to slip it would wear very quickly and fail like mine did.

hmm oddI'll have to go and have a look at mine again as it didn't move independantly of the bendix screw.

Do yours have the screw portion or are they only driven out by the solenoid?

I did think it was a weird setup to have both a bendix and a positive engagement by the solenoid.

Yes it has the screw drive as well as the solenoid that throws the gear out
