Hi, my car did a great run from the Midlands around Cornwall recently with no problems at all.

Didn't use it for about 2 weeks and now the MIL light comes on more or less continuosly whilst using any throttle at all. When 'coasting' the light nearly always goes off. Tha car feels and sounds fine.

Does this sound like a fuel, or fuel supply problem?

Thanks in anticipation for any response.

You need to get it on the software or else you are guessing.

Dave I have no experience with the Cerbie engine software etc but if someone can enlighten us and its not stupidly expensive I'll have a look.

Thank you guyssmile

Chris, much appreciated, I'll take you up on that if we find out how. She feels fine, but I don't want to risk damaging her in any way!

What does the MIL light mean? (I assume you have some sort of owner's manual that tells you.)

The mil light means that the car has a problem and you should stop driving it (generally as it might damage cats if overfuelling).
You cant tell specifically what problem without the software.

Malfunction Indicator Light, it's just a general SOS from the ECU, as said, you need to read it to find out! smile

Same thing happens on mine but only under wide throttle hard acceleration. Was told by Rich at Dulford it's likely an airflow meter or related problem, but get it sorted by a specialist is the answer. Of course if you have no cats to damage, carry on! thumbup

Could be a throttle pot has malfunctioned, as it come up as soon as you move the throttle.

If one TP goes open circuit, I believe it will use the other and run on a sort of error mode until you get it fixed.

Hope that helps?

Dave / Chris

I have the software on CD, you can have a copy if you like.

I have it loaded on an old laptop, because it's pre-vista (obviously!) but I've been assured it runs on XP or anything older.

Mine doesn't work, I have to admit, because it looks for the car on COM1, but if Windows has assigned another COM port it won't connect. You have to manually change it in device manager, to Com 1 - I haven't done that yet.

I was assured by the man I bought that car from that the software DOES work!

Thanks All, my light comes on with any throttle, I certaintly haven't used her much or accelerated at all hard just in case.

Andrew many thanks for your offer, I'm sure Chris will be along to say if he thinks he can use it (he's a million times more practical than me smile).

It may be something really simple. If you push your foot flat down on the accelerator, the throttle pot can go out of range if its not been set quite right, and the mil light will come on, but will switch off the minute you come back from WOT.

My mate is a computer viz so I don't know if it was due to that or it my just work, I keep saying I am going to try it but never get round to it, I am thinking if it does not work it my be worth trying a right click on the short cut then click on "compatibility" and then tick the box to "run this program in compatibility mode for windows xp" it my be worth a try.

Dave, it doesn't look too hard, I'll have to make the lead up but thats not a problem.

Dave's car is a 1999 4.5 AJP so will it be the later version of the software?

And is it a 9 way conector on the ECU?
I just found a cable on ebay that has a 3 way connector to the ECU.

Chris
