I've had my 4.5 since 4th Nov 03 and it let me down this afternoon for the first time.
Changed from 3rd to 2nd while coming up to a roundabout and the clutch felt a bit "springy". Came out of the roundabout, went to change to 3rd and the clutch pedal went straight to the floor without any pressure. The pedal has just got the spring to return it to the top.
Pulled into layby after 1 mile of 2nd gear running in a 60 limit, hazards on.
Lots of fluid under the car so RAC called. Home now.

Does anyone know just by the above if it's the slave or master that's at fault? Would they both do the same thing?

Is there any fluid in the footwell? If not then it'll be the slave cylinder that has gone. Unfortunately the slave cylinder is in the bell housing and will cost a bit to get sorted.
The master cylinder is cheaper to do as it is more accessible, but i'd recommend doing both at the same time. I know of one instance in which one of the cylinders was changed and the new seals then put added pressure on the old seals of the other cylinder, so that went shortly after.

Sorry to hear that Dave,
Ian at Castles will be able to help....and if they are too busy might be worth having a word with C.D.L. Racing.

I have both numbers if you want to drop me a mail.

Hope you are able to get it sorted by the next meet.

Well the dealer I bought it from was ordering a new clutch away for a new year fit. FOC.
Looks like more for him to look at.

No fluid inside the car so looks like it's the pain in the a**e cylinder. I wonder if the dealer will replace both? Hmmm!

Cheers all and happy Christmas.

You may well be in luck. From what I understand, the work required to replace the slave cylinder is pretty much the same as replacing the clutch. So, the additional cost shouldn't be too bad (as it would certainly make sense to do both at the same time).

If the car was bought in early November 2003, the concerned dealer (by law, I think) should give a 3-month dealer warranty. Wonder if that should cover it.

Or is it just an impression.

Thanks Munir. I think the dealer will be happy to sort. Shouldn't have a problem.
