Just opened up the cap and no oil in it at all.....am i right thinking it should be a 1/4 full? Also black bits in it which i take to be rubber from the seal from previous chats.

Cheers

To confirm its the master cylinder you'l need to check the drivers footwell for signs of fluid, if theres none then check under the car for it, the latter meaning its the slave inside the gearbox thats knackered. The black rubber in the master suggest its one or the other, if it is the master and you change it be prepared for the slave to go shortly after it frown
The master is easy enough to change, just a bit fiddly!!
I'm sure you can just buy the seals and replace them rather than the whole unit to bring the cost down. The master cylinder is off a ford i think, check the equivelent parts post for the number.

As for the level, ive always topped mine up to 3/4 full, there a lip that sticks out, thats where i fill mine to!!

Master should be about 3/4 full. When I checked, there was oil on the cluch lever, suggesting a leaky master.
