Whilst driving i can hear a tap tap tap noise and its getting on my tits! I've been told if you put some silicone on the back of the rear pads this should stop. Is this true or am i being taken for a ride???

You can do that or you can get some anti rattle shims that stick to the back of the pads (try Clevor Trevor)

Don't want to worry you, but I had this on mine. When I looked at the rear offside disk, the small flanges holding the 2 disks together had cracked about a 1/3 of the way round and the disks had started to come apart. It was this high point that was causing the clicking. Well worth checking.

Yes, quite common. I tried the silicone thing but it didn't cure it for me - perhaps I didn't use enough but I didn't want it round the seals on the calipers. I took the pads out, cleaned up the slight lip that had formed on the outer edge of the pads (from the centre of the disc) and stuck the anti rattle stuck on the pad backs. That finally sorted it for me, but you may get silicone to work for you.

I had this, the machining for the disc face is ever so slightly off. Put a chamfer on the inner most edge of the pad, this then clears the egg shaped edge as it were.

Oh Graham, I'd managed to convince myself that all was fine, until you showed that there was a worse scenario! hehe

JensenA used silicone on the brake pads when he had it, as I had fun getting the pads out the first time. I cleaned them all up and the rears used to tick or squeal but I've never had a problem since switching to mintex 1144 pads all around.

I'll see what Brummies pads do when I get new front disks.

The tapping on the back is most likely that the little anti-rattle springs that go over the split-pins are broken / missing.

It's annoying but won't stop them working.

They look as though they came from a ball point pen
