Hi everyone

Just failed my MOT as the Sports Exhaust fitted to the car has no-Cats in it.

So.. the original owner sales document to James Agger states that there were a set of Catalytic Converters kept in a box and only used to get through the MOT.

Does anyone have any I could borrow or spare to sell?

Unluckily I don't know the exact model of the exhaust but stainless steel and very loud and here's a picture for any exhaust gurus out there! :-)

Smoke isn't good, you may need that looking at, especially if they refused to even test it.

Does James Agger know where the cats are that came with the car?

Alex - I think it is more relevant whether you have a 4.2 or 4.5 rather than the type of sports exhaust......

I have just sent you an email smile

Hi Amazon (and everyone else!)

Thanks for your replies - all very helpful :-)

The 'smoking' statement was from my local garage guy who is doing an oil change for me and took it to his local MOT guy. He's really nice and quite cost effective but when it came to discussions about CATS he didn't even know it didn't have any or why they would make such a difference [and I didn't check!] so I think the 'smoking' issue might just be a 'castrophic failure of MOT emissions test as it has no CATS issue' - hopefully as no smoke normally comes out of it!

The car is a 4.2, and unluckily the car has gone through 2 or 3 owners since James Agger so I don't know where the CATS left the car, but probably were kept/sold seperately to generate revenue.

Amazon had a great suggestion of a garage/mechanic near me in London to take it to, so I think I'm going to take his advice on that one, but probably handy to have my own set of CATS for the future as I plan to keep the car so if anyone has some for sale, or suggestions of who to buy them from (£150ish each on eBay but have no idea if they are any good!) then would definitely be interested :-)

Either way it's good to know people who can help with this car in the London area as it's not exactly a normal car that everyday garages can help with as experience is proving!!!

There's a really good post on the levels they need to be, and what was measured without CATS (blimey!) here

I did post once what my results were but it flies through the mot test with the cats in. Never tried with them out, it goes in for a service & MOT & cats put in, gets MOT'd then cats come out again.

Hope you get your MOT Sorted.

This has been discussed before on several ocassions - maybe do a search?

My experience. My car (98 4.2 - no cats - sports exhaust) passed its MOT via a 'friendly' garage. I talked to the tester before I took my car in and he went into a sub menue on the MOT computer and the car passed the emission test (it was half the allowed max level). Its something to do with stating the car has an engine from unknown origin and hence it only has to pass a basic emissions test...? Apologies if this is inaccurate...This is my experience - there may be those who dispute this or says it wrong, etc - but I do have an MOT. It just depends on if the tester is willing to help you out.

Lets face it - some fit the cats to pass an MOT and remove them again...

Good luck + nice looking car

Thanks Peter for the reply and yes that would make sense - I think unluckily when it when in for the MOT I didn't go with it, and didn't know what to ask for - luckily now I do from everyone's advice above!

Will let you know how I get on!!

..and PASSED MY MOT! :-)

Just thought I'd share the excitement and one warning to sort out for next year with a shock (ignoring the compulsary rubbish hand-brake warning).
