My first 1/4 mile on Sunday
Discussion
I'm hoping to attend the RWYB at York on Sunday, "Cerb willing, praise be to Wheeler"
....
I've caught the bug after the timing gear at Fighting torque recorded the first quarter times, but not speeds. So thought I'd have a proper go for once.
I took Longbow's advice on launching at 2000 revs & that worked brilliantly, however if I get enough runs, I may try some higher / lower rev launches.
I'll try to turn up with less than a quarter of a tank of fuel.
Tyre pressures... I'm after any advice. For road use, I run around with 24psi in the rears. Is it worth lowering them for the day ?
Burn outs..... Whilst I know I'm not going to be doing my clutch/gearbox any favours, is it really necessary to do the burn outs. These tyres have got to get me back to Brum ?
Any advice welcome

At Brighton last week I dropped the pressure to 18psi for the practice and still got plenty of wheelspin. For the timed run I dropped them further to 14psi (just dont tell TC
) and got away much better
I don't know what the surface will be like (and i was recently labelled a tit for suggesting this on the tvrcc forums) but don't be too ready to make your car light at the rear .. cyclone1 did all his running with a full tank and a boot full of heavy amplifiers/ICE install .. seeing as there's not much scope for moving weight around in a cerb if you're being traction limited on your runs then adding extra weight into the boot is a very good move. You would only find that out though once youd done a few runs and seen what grip levels the track has to offer and you'd worked out whether the offset in power to weight was worth it for extra traction.

Jules.
Cheers Jules..Harry
12.7, 108mph
There was a 0-60mph lane, that I recorded 4.5 seconds on.
My best ET was 113 mph
There's two set off points, effectively four lanes going in to two, one of which was where the guys did burn outs. But I just used the normal start line and struggled to get any grip. I kept the tyres at standard pressure, plus we had the luggage in the boot from my day out in Hull
I almost stalled on one run, and did a 14.something
I reckon the car could do a low 12....With another driver

The luggage will be helping you .. i normally advise 2 of 20litre water butts in the boot .. some people will tell you it's mad to add weight but an extra 40kg on an 1100kg car isn't a big % but it's rear of the back wheels so its traction effects are much more significant. Run with 40kg in the boot and drop your tyres to 12psi and watch that et fall
Also are you holding 3rd gear over the line? a gearchange to 4th just before the line will cost you 0.3-0.4 seconds straight away and a few mph as the aero drag during the gearchange will really pull your final speed back.

Ta Joolz.
Traction was definitely a problem, and at York on the 'amateurs' start line, as suggested, more weight would have been required.
I tried some 3rd & 4th gear runs. Can't remember now, but I presume my 12.7 was 3rd gear & the 113mph (13.0 sec) runs were probably the 4th gear ones.
I think there may be A RWYB at Santa Pod, next month, so I'll have a tinker about with the tyre pressures on that one.

Santa pod can be very slippery, even my 4 litre V8S would spin up on the gearchange to 3rd gear.
I found it an absoliute nightmare, even in the V8S too, less grip in places than a B road with cow s
te on it. Then you might hit a sticky/glue spot on one side, likes fubes did and snap a drive shaft

Well done Russell.
It was good to see another TVR at the track, especially in blue with a 666 plate.
You obviously have some good taste.
12.7 was a respectable time and you managed to tame that Cerbie torque off the line.
I agree with others that you should have dropped the tyre pressures at leat 10lb but wether or not you changed to 4th before the line wouldnt make that much of a difference to your ET. Its all about the first 60 foot that counts.

LikewiseI'll definitely drop the tyre pressures next time. If I start getting addicted, I might even invest in some of those sticky tyres. The burn outs look good fun.
I've been googling & trying to find that mad Scirocco. It looks like the 'Paul Jordan' one, 600bhp & 4 wheel drive, I believe.
Can't remember his exact times, but I think it was 0-60mph in 2.6 secs & a low 10 @ 141mph
Thought the "Rocket car repairs" advert on the side was quite appropriate

Have you decided on the Chim's next reincarnation ?
Yeah get a pair of Toyo R888s at least.
The burnouts are easy... im fitting a line lock for next year but all i did was heal the brake and let loose.
There are so many suprising cars at the drag strip arent there? People dont realize what they are missing.
I guess you have seen my thread in the general section.... just gathering information and weighing things up at the moment... keep an eye on the thread as i will update along the way.
Probably forged pistons, a nitrous friendly cam and head work.

Nice work Russ
So, how would the BST launch/times compare to York?
On my phone now Nick, so excuse the lack of editing. Right hand lane measured 0-60 instead of the 60 foot. So best run on right lane, reaction 1.19, 0-60 in 4.49, 1/8 in 8.33 @ 88.76, 1/4 in 12.71 @ 110.28. Next best run was in the left lane, reaction 1.16, 60 foot in 2.25, 1/8 in 8.54 @ 87.73, 1/4 in 12.89 @ 113.09 Grip varies alot at proper strips, though when they're good, they're very good... the BST's are consistantly realtively poor, typically theres 0.5seconds+ difference, some of the guys at the BST's swear its worth even more. Depends how much power you run, but for a Cerb, I reckon about half a second.
