After doing 1500 miles in my 4.5 since last week, I've noticed a kind of grumbling coming from the near side when going around roundabouts. Doesn't do it under normal handling, just with quite a bit of lock on and leaning a fair bit. Any ideas?

Could be a wheel bearing.

Did think that, but just had new wheels fitted before I got it, I'm sure they would have noticed if there was any play. Also it seems to come from both ends.

had this on a 4.2 about 3 months ago, would only do it around big roundabouts at speed and hard right turns, turned out to be top ball joint. with the car on the ground put your hands under the wheel arch grab hold of the top of the wheel and pull out hard, if there is movement then the ball joint needs replacing. not a bad job to do but would use a ball end allen key for the 4 bolts that secures the ball joint to the hub and tap the allen key in the top of the bolt to make sure its fully in, couple of quirts of wd40 wouldn't go a miss. once out the ball joint needed a fair whack to remove it from the mount.

I'll try that tomorrow. Any idea how long it will last before needing to be done?

wouldn't leave it to long, could start to knock your tyres out or cause more damage eek

there not expensive (£20), try RACETECH DIRECT http://www.tvrshop.com/product-subsection-detail.a...

by the way it did take a fair bit of strenght to feel the movement, 2 hands pull it out then push it back, then pull out again.

If you have 18" spiders just check that they are not touching the suspension arm on full lock.

two other sources for noises like this are the welds on the manifolds touching the chassis central lower rails and the engine low on oil, the air lock travelling through the oil hoses in the nearside engine bay to the oil cooler vibrate which gives a grumbling sound on right hand turns.

Check your oil level. Sounds mad but has come up on here a million times before. If it is not on max, top it off and it will go away, I assure you.

If your wheels are fouling on the wish bones then have your cambers checked and if that is ok then you will need lock stops fitting to the steering rack to reduce the steering angle slightly.

Thanks for all your imput. I'm picking Matt from Sp up on Monday and hopefully getting to the bottom of it. Doesn't do it in left handers as coming on to the m2 from sittingbourne is a great long tight one and not a sound. Put 400 miles on her yesterday does seem a bit noisier but still only on tilt. Checked oil and other suggestions but I'll let you know on Monday . Thanks again everyone.
