I'm in need of a 4.2 dipstick as the one someone sent me as a 4.2 isn't the right one, its a purple handle which is too thick to fit into the thin dipstick tube.

I had measurements for one but its a rather crude and risky way of checking it so if anyone has one can they please email me?

Thanks in advance

The early 4.2 cerbera dip stick is a rover V8 dip stick if this is of any help.

Someone had fitted a yellow plastic dipstick which seems to have come from another car altogether and too short compared to the tube it goes through so obviously a temporary bodge.

I had R8nan send me one for 4.2 V8 but i think it was the thicker one, purple handle with TVR embossed on it which has the bell-end (lol) too thick to fit into the tube so it was the wrong one or as BPP said must be a Rover V8 item but trawling through google i cant find any info it. I had RussellM kindly give me the dimensions of his but i have no info on where to buy or find another spare one. The guy off ebay who breaks TVR's as with most of his stuff wants an extorniate amount for it, £50!!

Hi,

I have just seen your post, sorry the dipstick didnt fit, it definitely is the early 4.2 one as it came off my own engine. Might be able to help though, if you would like me to send the outer sleeve over for that dipstick I can do that no problem, all you need to do is attach it to your sump. PM me your address and I will post it on Monday.

No Worries Bud. To be fair it wasnt your fault, i should have measured the tube ID and gone from there but what i was going to do was use russelm's measurements from his and mod the dipstick you sent me to those dimensions and shim down the bell so it fits through the tube fitted. I think i need to combine this with an oil change so i can mark min/max marks on it?

the dipsticks with purple ends are from the 4.5's, the tube is at the front of the engine and very easy to access and use, not in the arkward place that the 4.2's are at the back of engine under the fuel rail. its possible that r8nan has got a 4.2 with a 4.5 bottom end and crank! i heard that when TVR had a few problems with cranks snapping they rebuilt the engine with a 4.5 crank and bottom end.

the 4.2 dipstick is more simple looking and has a simple metal loop at the top and yes the dip sticks on the 4.2 are fragile and easy to break the tops off when trying to push them back in and so best to use 2 hands when pushing them back in, one to guide the stick and one to push.

Super, just the answer i was looking for. Yes the Purple handle'd ones do look far more substantial. What colour are the looped 4.2 ones? Any pics?

the 4.2 ones are not quite as flash i'm affaird to say, they just have a simple metal hoop and flared cup that sits over the tube.

they are also a solid piece of flat metal unlike the 4.5 which are a flexible bendy thing

tom didn't you say on another thread that your having problems with your oil light? if you have got the wrong dipstick this could explain the light flashing, i not sure if the two dipsticks are the same lenght or if earlier cars were fitted with the flexi one. both 4.2's i had were 1997 cars and both had solid simple dipsticks, the flexi purple one has a cutout groove on the purple handle which locks into a slot on the tube on 4.5's, where as the 4.2 ones just push into the tube until tight.

may be someone can supply the lenghts of each dipstick

Purple ended and front mounted on a 4.2 here hehe I do think the position was changed when they adopted large journal for the 4.2's which was around 98. After that I think all dipsticks will be the same regardless of 4.2 or 4.5 - Sounds like you need and early one and sounds like that could be a boggo Rover item as I certainly remember my Chim used to have a simple looped top - on the plus side I would guess that should make the search a lot easier.

Yep mine has the cut out on it but my tube also has the slot on it, I don't think my engine had a 4.5 bottom end because I managed to snap the crank in 8 places so I'm Doubly confused

Regards the oil light being on this only happened after collecting the car from getting the clutch changed recently(have owned the car 3 years this July)

if it helps I could measure the distance from the mounting lug to the min & max level lines on my dipstick? 4.2 rear mount.
