Thought I'd post this out of interest - to see if anyone's seen or heard of this before....

Basically, problem manifested after a couple of hours of good solid driving, so the she's hot, and thoroughly so.

First I heard was a little squeaking, I'd geuss metallic, like a bearing or something. Stopped immediately to take a good look over her. Nothing.

After satisfying myself that there was nothing obviously wrong, started again, no issue. No noises. Drives fine.

15 minutes later, waiting to turn right, plinky metallic type noise returned very briefly, and then she cut out completely. No splutting, no nothing, just like pulling the big fuse.

Again, complete overhaul, as I'm more worried now... spent a long time going over everythnig I could uncover or get to... still nothing...

Eventually thought I'd try starting her again with bonnet up, cowling off etc to see if the noise /issue returned. Nothing.

Given the time, she's cooled a lot, which is the only possible factor i can think of, which might have anything to do with the fact that she's fine now.

I don't want to drive on a problem, hence the posting, because the next step i can think of to recreate this is to drive hard for a long period to get the same kind of heat saturation - i.e. the same circumstances.

Alternative is to just take her in and leave for "diagnosis", but presume they'd do the same, unless it strikes a chord with anyone?

I can't see it being mechanical, because everything's fine now.

If it was electrical, there surely wouldn't have been the metally/plinky noise, would there? Or maybe that's a red herring...

If it's a heat thing, then clearly something critical to forward motion is being impacted! Don't want this issue at 70 on the motorway!

Any thoughts.......

Sounds like something seizing up if there's a squeaking shortly followed by a stall, and it frees up when cooled down. Someone on here had a camshaft break at the front bearing. Just a thought.

I had something similar. After a long hot and fast drive it would cut out at tick over. Never had any squeeky noises though. Put mine down to fuel evaporation.

Well... will have a word with Austec who just rebuilt the engine, so one one hand I wouldn't expect it to be engine related, but on the other, it's been worked on... so maybe...

Something like that sounds as though it should be "catastrophic" though, not just a cut out and then acting fine...?

Either way, not moving her until there's some more clarity!

Hopefully it will be nothing , there are plenty of things that make horrid noises that arent related to engine rebuilds eg air con compressor, alternator, diff, prop, exhaust, brakes, wheel bearings, clutch, gear box.......
I guess your concern is that Austec wont be able to diagnose without the symptomns present.
But I would get it back to them - they can do quite a lot of investigation without taking heads off etc.....
I would be insistent that you want a proper and full investigation.
I know what its like post a rebuild (been there twice) - you need to love the car again and dont want to be listening out for noises and losing the love! I guess your rebuild was expensive as you have gone for a mega build?

I know exactly what you mean about loving her, and not worrying all the time. Very apt.

I'll book her in and can leave her for as long as they need, now the weather looks to be finally turning a little more into "Autumn as we know it".

She's with Austec as we speak.

Not managed to identify definitively, but Paul had a look when she arrived, as she was running reasonably hot... initial thoughts are that it is something at the top of the engine, to do with tappets... seating or something come out/loose? Not sure... But they seemed quite relaxed about it... left with them for further investigation/confirmation.

Explained all the issues and experiences, and seemed to fit.

What that means to the car, not sure yet. See what they find ...

I'm sure Austec will sort it out, but on the evidence so far I'd be looking for a heat induced electric/electronic fault causing the engine to be under-fuelled. This will kill the torque, and if you then open the throttle it could lead to pinking.

Saw yours when I picked mine up today, wondered who's it was as I'd not seen it around, thought it was Tim's (ACT) at first glance. With the in house workshop facilities there now nothing is too large a job, hope its identified and sorted soon.

Crikey - turned out to be "another first"!

Looks like the oil line to one bank managed to block somehow. Might have been something from the rebuild which managed to find it's way into the line and cause the block. Some further "fine detail" investigation required there, but either way, not been seen before!

So... bottom line is that some replacements are now required on one bank, due to wear caused by oil eventually coming to a complete block. That explains the squeaking, and resultant cut out. Also explains why the noise level increased, and affected the tappets, resulting in "ticking" etc.

Means the engine has to be dropped out to fix though... fortunately the weather's not looking too great out there, so not missing quality drive time smile

Sheesh... another saga!

Yes - it's all under warranty, fortunatley for me... just a pain for Austec frown

Neither of us are having much luck with this! smile

Still - problem identified. Resolution en route. Just a matter of time...

Not back!!!

Taking a while, but to be honest, with the weather, and everything going on with me, was happy enough to have her away for a while. Must say, not having her at the

So she's still in bits with Austec at the moment. Waiting on a quote to get the induction sorted. Pipes have started to lose form, and distort at extremes, so looking to get induction sorted out - seeing as the engine's out, or in pieces under warranty, then figured it might make sense for everyone smile Cost save for me, some revenue for them as opposed to 'free' warranty work...

Must chase that quote though.....

Hope it is all finished soon what with the nicer days we are now having.

I think the fitting of short induction is not a huge job. AFAIK most of the expense is the purchase of the kit and then the subsequent rolling road session to map the ECU?

Yes, need to push it along... although just as it feels like Spring is here, it drops 10 degrees and snows! rolleyes

Ref the cost, yes, think the majority is indeed in the kit itself and the RR session - although mines been mapped as part of the rebuild, and need to check with them about the details, but think as a result its more "tweaking" at this stage. Fuzzy on those details I know rotate

Definitely missing her... in one of the heart versus heads situations though... likely to be moving soon, somewhere with a warm snug garage cloud9 so if that happens shortly, happy to have her in the shop for a little longer...

Found out what was wrong - turned out not to be as bad as initial investigations has suggested. Some o-ring malformed in the oil flow reducing in, eventually, reduced oil to one of the heads - as I understand it.

Engine out, again, couple of new bits and pieces, re-assemble, and we're hoping a few weeks from now.

Bonus of being able to slip in an induction kit on the basis everytihng is out anyways... idea

So following a re-map, looking forward to getting the charts. 400+ ? scratchchin and some good weather would be most welcome!

The place I'm in, I have trouble accommodating 2 cars, and with the weather, it's really been a convenience... so not disgruntled smile Makes the return all the more sweet.

Still trying to find a place with a nice warm garage though!
