Replacing the exhaust on my 4.2 and was wondering if the link pipes have to have the bit of welded flat bar holding the two of them together, and if removing it would place strain on any other part of the system ?

If it doesn't fit well then it will break anyway so may not be that necessary but there is very little support for the system.

Thanks, yes the old one broke, but fractured the pipe in the process, so wondered if I would get away without it.

Just out of interest, how many supports should there be, my system is only supported by the two close to the rear silencer. The center section has no support, is this right ?

Shouldn't there be a support for the centre bit of the exhaust that attaches to the ladder frame that attaches to the chassis under the exhaust? My one has this and seems to get through the mounts (cotton reel type thing with a bolt out each side) quite quickly, if I don't have it the cats can gently knock on the chassis!

Not on my 1998 4.2 The exhaust is supported by the manifold at the engine end and a single hangar on each side at the rear. The complete length of cats (de-cats!) and intermediate pipe is unsupported except at the ends.

My act exhaust has a cotton real type support at the rear of the centre pipes as well.
Pretty sure the original pipes had this also.
You can make out the mounting hole.

Thanks , a picture speaks a thousand words. My link pipes just have the one bracket welded on ( the one with the hole in the picture,) but has no mounting hole. Thats where it cracked so was just going to leave them seperate.

That could be why mine are unsupported - they are not joined! The intermediate pipes are 2 separate pipes with none of the bracketery between them.

There should definitely be a "cotton reel" type support on the centre section as above.

I would think the lack of support would help cause the manifolds to crack.

Hi Alan,

I had new pipes made up in stainless that run from the manifold right through to the rear section and didn't bother with connecting them as my original has broken also. They seem ok without it.

Thanks for the replies smile

I have the same system as Byker28i, I noticed a hole for mounting a bobbin and also a corresponding hole in the ladder frame as WIL35 said.
The system I've taken off didn't have a cross bracket, therefore no hole to mount anything.
Does anyone have a source for the bobbin, or does anyone have the part number? it doesn't appear to be listed in the Cerb manual.

You can get them in Halfords, about £2.
