Windscreen got hit by a big stone (drivers side bottom corner) and its left a pinhead size chip on the outside but a 5p size mark on the inside, as though its de-laminated in that spot. Autoglass reckon it can`t be repaired because it`s within 5mm of the screen surround and recommend a new screen.(This was an assesment over the phone). Any thoughts please? Thanks.

if its within 5mm of the edge of the screen you wont be able to repair it due to the suction cup thing they use being about 8" diameter, but it also wont fail an MOT due to it being out of your line of sight when driving.

Just try it, see how it goes, it may never shatter, i've had many many cars with chips in the window, some bigger than you are describing and they havent gone.
If it does shatter you will need a new window.

Ok thanks for that. I didn`t realise the repair unit was so big so I think I will do as you say and wait to see what happens. I keep thinking of the advert though when the screen cracks as the car goes over a large pothole!

I don't know anyone who thats happened to, and I along with others in the co. did over 40,000 mile per year many of them with chips and cracks. More chance of the frost doing it if it's out in the cold at this time of year. Hopefully be ok.

There are DIY repair kits available from Halfrauds. While it obviously won't do as good a job as a proper repair, it may improve it appearance wise very significantly. The suction thingy is much smaller and you my be able to trim it on one side to get to the chip.

My missus got that Gavin from Autoglass to inject his special resin in to her crack.

I wouldn't mind, but she hasn't even got a car.

FYI and FWIW, the Autoglass repair system does restrict in these circumstances (they use the Glass Medic repair system with a 'RAS' head which, they're correct in stating, will not repair anything so close to the edge).

But this is not to say that the damage cannot be repaired. The Glass Medic system is what AG use; most other repairers use different systems, such as Aegis and Esprit which are very well suited for all repairs, including the one in discussion (provided it is within a permitted size etc etc).

Ok thanks. I think I may follow up on that rather than trust to luck.

Try him for the repair.

I noticed in the small print of my insurance this year that there's a £1500 limit on the glass cover that wasn't in there last year.
I guess somebody stung them for one of the bespoke ones from Finland and they've wised up.
Either way, so long as somebody is supplying and fitting for sub £1.5k, I won't really care should the worst happen...

Although I'm not surprised, replacing a screen on a Cerb should never be anywhere near 1500-quid. Not unless there were exceptional circumstances... for example, the glass cost / availability, or that the screen fittedwas a rare / special heated one.
