i've used it in my audi, it doesnt seem to return as good mpg as shell v-power 99.

Does your cerb have a knock sensor?, without one I dont think it makes a difference.

Why buy fuel from Tesco? If we don't support the independent fuel stations we will loose them and hand a monopoly to the supermarkets. They are no longer cheaper in most cases so support independent traders.

No, I don't have a filling station - just hate Tesco.

Mine runs horribly on Tesco. Every now and then I used to try it because I couldn't quite convince myself that it made much difference but it really does. Shell V power every time now.

It will take more than one fill up for you to see the difference and not wise to chop and change octane. If I can't get 99 I just put in enough to get me to where I can!

I have 5p off per litre voucher and the 99 stuff is same price anyway as the V-power from my local [-]rip off merchants[-] shell garage. The other shell garages are matching the supermarkets but they are out of my way and the saving is eaten up by the cost of travelling.

Local Shell
- 108 for 95 ron
- 116 for V-power

Local Tesco
- 104 for 95 ron
- 109 for 99 ron

Distant Shell
- 104 for 95 ron
- 112 for V-power

Pisses me right off, why can't all shell garages charge the same amount?

ok, but no comparison there of tescos '99 - which in comparison to shell v-power IS different, well certainly in my experience anyway.

Hi Al

You tight wad! Heres me thinking you were after every horse power hike you could get your hands on!

Only joking...my understanding was that 'all' the petrol in regions around the uk came from one source ie a refinery...and that each company added specific products to the base 'petrol or diesel' to produce the desired fuel...octane boosters, detergents, etc. The supermarkets did not add these additives and hence undercut the shells, BP's etc but the fuel was not deemed to be of the same quality...?

Now someone will come along and say this is bks!

Agree with you on the price fluctuations - there is a shell & a BP station about 100 yards apart near our office and the shell station always 1p a litre cheaper...I always use VPower for the Cerb anyway but also fill the BMW up at the shell station just on pure principle.

rofl I know it sounds tight but was given the ticket so thought i'd use it, better to fill up a 60 litre tank than a 40 litre tank with it. but opted for the bd expensive shell stuff instead.

like you say its the general principal to use the cheaper garage, im not tight, just hate being ripped off. ETA: it saves me a whole £48 per year rofl - didnt realise it was that little getmecoat ITS PRINCIPLE AND IM STICKING TO IT!!!! hehe

and yes it is true about all fuel coming from one distillary and adding their own additives.

To save you all the trouble of watching it, FF to 4.23.

or if your even lazier, Test result's on an Imprezza....

------------------ ------ - BHP - Torque

Shell Optimax------------ 249 258
BP Ultimate---------------248 248
Supermarket 99---------- 232 235

Edited by JensenA on Monday 9th November 12:11
I cant be bothered to watch the video again but I think the lower results were from ordinary supermarket fuel and NOT 99 RON.

Why would it take more than one fill up to see a difference? I fill it when it is fairly low so say 1/8th of a tank. That dilutes any additives (octane is nominaly the same) by 7/8th. All it takes to see a difference is long enough for the Tesco fuel to flush the filter and lines and it starts running badly. This happens consistently and the difference in running particularly at idle is quite marked.

ETA: I am not talking about changing octane - V-Power and Tesco being both 99

Hi Al,
I use Tesco99 for the Caterham (and for the Civic when I feel like it). I haven't tried Shells V-Power so I could not possibly comment.
In the Caterham, I don't notice any difference to using 95 (I still scare myself s****ess). The manual says to use 98ron. Seeing as it is easier for me to get 99, I use that.
In the little civic, I get better mpg with 99 (its only about 30-35 miles more on a full tank.

I use Tescos because
1) Its cheaper
2) I get points hehe
3) I feel that the turnover of the fuel would be higher... ("fresher" petrol for me)

Hope this helps dude. smile

yep, that the way I interpreted that. It was a comparison of 95 vs 97 vs 99 ron fuels

Never go to Tesco. When I did car started pinking (speed six). Don't need 99Ron anyway. Always use Esso 97 now. AJP8s appreciate the 99 more than the S6. Never go to BP either now, as it damn near killed the car. Coughed and spluttered until I refueled.

In fairness, all petrol stations have issues from time to time, but so far my local garage has beeen flawless.
