could be the ribbon on the back, if you've been doing stuff under the dash recently you made have dislodged something, lay on your back in the drivers footwell with a torch and have a look up behind the dash see if everything is still attached or swap the switches over although this is not as easy as the 2 wires on the back are soldered on.

your going to have to probably remove the heater fascia anyway, wether your checking the wires or changing the switch. on the back are 2 U shaped brackets slide over some studing with small plastic nuts securing them, undo the nuts on the bracket nearest the steering wheel and remove bracket, you can get away with just undoing the nuts on the other bracket about half way and leaving the bracket on but loose, then gentle push the fascia forward from behind. use a 5/6 mm socket and your fingers to undo the nuts!

Check the control unit in the passenger footwell and jiggle the wires on lower plug (nearest to heatsink on box) as sometimes the connectors burn out due to current being drawn.

I have a over ride with a switch controlling the hot fan under the heater control unit that simply puts the hot air on full blast or off. the Speed control went on mine. I'd be interested to know if you fix it.
