I thought the warm air fix involving half a tennis ball in the hole by the off-side indicator might be just about within my capabilities, but no. First “half” was too small, second half was just right … until it popped through inside. Will it fall out, or lodge itself somewhere?

It won't fall out, it's nestling in the bottom with all the leaves and other bits of tennis ball tried by previous owners. There's a panel in the wheel arch (the lower of the two) to gain access. Need to bung mine up, eyeball vents can't hold back the freezing blast frown

Foam balls are what you need, the sort you get with kids bat and ball games, larger than a tennis ball but wedge in the hole nicely.

This is a car forum isn't it?

Soft balls do work as I got two from toysrus to try them out, once I found out it worked I put a plastic bag inside the wing at the narrowest point and filled it with expanding foam (bag was so I could get it out easy if needed) anyway it worked so it has now been there for 8 years now with no problems at all. Warm feet and legs now smile

Marcus - lots of people have a problem with the butterfly in the air-mixer box being forced open at high speed due to the cold (driver's side air) intake being directly in line to inlet (compared to the hot (passenger side) intake having to take a more convoluted path.

The solution is to slow the entry of air on the cold side by partially blocking the intake, either in the inner wing, or at the intake itself (hence the half tennis ball).
