I had been warned a couple of years ago that my cams were shot, so when I stuck my 4.2 into Offords for a service before Xmas I was less than surprised to get a phonecall saying that the hardening was now worn through and the lobes were starting to shed metal.

I picked it up on Sat and WOW, what a difference. It genuinely feels like a new car again. Gone is the lumpiness, the transmission shunt, the hunting and the bag-o-spanners startup. Now she feels smooth and willing, and bangs and pops on the over-run galore. Rather than being an endurance to drive, its a pleasure.

60k miles on the original cams wasn't too bad. Lets hope these last as long....

That sounds great! Was it horribly pricey, if you don't mind me asking?

I've been wondering how long it might be until I have to consider such an overhaul...

I saw it in there when I went to pick mine up on the 23rd, a wonderful thing that (my) old car.

Not so sure about the paint though wink

Do you know which cams they put in?

Pricey? Well the bill was a whisker over £2000 + VAT. That included a 12k mile service which was about £550.
The main cost was £680 for a pair of cams. 16 buckets at £16 each and a lot of shims. I breathed in whilst I paid, but the end result is actually worth it for the change that I've experianced.

And davidd, you're just jealous that your bent 4.5 isn't that colour smile

The cams were standard TVR power 4.2 jobbies, the so-called whisper cams. I actually asked if I could have the orginal clatter cams, but they don't make them any more. Changing to 4.5 cams or a different profile was a possibility but I didn't want to get into ECU swaps and dyno's (I have enough of that with the race car)

That doesn't sound too bad to me. I don't think that I've ever come away from a service without slipping in to four figures courtesy of "other bits" anyway!

I assume that only the cams were done, or did you have any other work while it was "open"?

lol, it's only the paint that's bent, some folks pay for that you know.

Anyway I'm glad the old car is in such fine fettle, you ever going to get to drive it??

Mr d.

Not only am I'm driving it, but I brought it back down to London last night in -2deg and a bunch of snow. It's done more mileage this weekend than in the last 6 months combined.

Whilst it'll never be my daily driver, I certainly expect to get more use out of it, now that it has actually lives at home.
