Garage Dimensions
Discussion
Hi,
I`m mid demolition of my existing tiny garage, and before i commit to building my new garage i`d happily welcome any thoughts, or possible changes to the shape or size which could be incorporated into the design.
New garage is to be a large single; 4m width and 8 m in length, up and over door to be 3m x 2m (approx dims). I have room to go a tad wider and longer if required, but i have been thinking it might be a bit overkill for a single garage with some working space. I dont want the garage to take over the rear garden.
I welcome any gems which might make tvr ownership a bit easier.
Thanks
Alex

mine is 4m X 9m perfect for a large single that doesn't over power my small garden, incorparated a summer house at the back as this faces West and a kitchen area to the side, so if the car goes we could apply for change of use and convert to a studio or small one bed bunglow to rent out

The rear will face north, so wont be much good for anything but a bit of shade in the early morning come summer time. I`m envisaging the end of the garage will have a working area, with maybe an old ariel motorbike as well if i get my way.
I`m thinking i should have plenty of room, but i know i`ll lose space to kids toys and junk if i`m not careful. The old garage was just about big enough to get a tiny kit car in there, and thus ended up as junik storage and full of DIY bits as i rennovated the house.
How did you find the 4m width? enough to open doors and work around the car?
Does 8m length give me enough room to get the body off, or do i need another metre? (trying to think ahead should the worst happen)
Thanks

Im fitting a roller shutter door to my garage because it does not intrude so much into the garage as an up and over door. Just in case I ever need to do a body off on one of the cars.
Only problem i have with roller shutters is the space required for the roll. I am constrained my planning to a max height of 2.5m (flat roof then) getting that to work with a roller shutter, intel and door frame wont work for me.How much space are you losing to the door?
I`m looking at a Horizon tracked item 10' x 6'6", such as this below (Unless something a similar size pops up on ebay):

Jensen, my thoughts exactly but every penny i spend on this garage will come off the budget for a cerbera. The beam idea got dropped because of the restricted height and the fact i could always hire something to do the same job should the need arise. The pit idea got dropped when i saw the prices for the premade pits, and the fact i`ll possibly re use my existing garage floor within the new floor slab.
Garage will be a must for me if i am indeed crazy enough to buy one of these cars; as i'll be hoping to do a lot of maintenance myself (Read I need somewhere to go hide from the world and fix the TVR at weekends and weeknights if it does not behave)
On that note are any specific tools people would not be without for maintaining their cerbera? I have a half decent collection of tools from the past ten years of fettling with cars but i`m sure there are some speific tools which make some jobs just that bit easier.

If you've got a workbench at the back I think that you may need another 1.5m for that requirement. I wouldn't do it that way though unless you have no option. Allow for the body to be stored above the car by making the roof a protal design or build taller walls or a collared roof.JR: I have a small bunker for gardening items and a larger steel shed (shockingly bad with condensation)for BBQ/kids bike trailer/ wife's bike/ ladders and general house DIY bits. I`m hoping the garage will be my own space for classic bikes/ car.
300mm roll? I could maybe just squeeze that in if i used a catnic and had about a 50mm fall across the roof. I`d have no roof insulation where the roll would be though. Any chance of forwarding any details? i`d like to see if it requires a frame and how its mounted. Thanks.
Cheers for input

No problem there then.AlexH22 said:

Are you sure that you wouldn't be able to fit a sheet of Kingspan in there?I would go for a sectional door, the main reason is that you can order a 40mm thick insulated door ( some thing a roller shutter door cannot do ), go for insulated walls and ceiling to keep the TVR in a dry area. I used Gyproc dot and dab onto a single brick wall and then plastered over the top. I then put dynotile flooring down and installed a 4 post lift, extra headroom here would be usefull.

Thanks JR.
The roof should be capable of taking a cerb body as long as its stripped right back and its not snowing ;o). Its over designed as i`ve reduced the spacing by a 1/3 for the timbers. I`m sure i could knock some sort of frame up if required anyway.
Sounds like i should have enough room to go hide for a few weeks in there.
I`m trying my best to keep costs down on the build. So far its going well as i have 5000 eng spec bricks in my back garden which only cost me a delivery charge (thanks dad)! Quite nice bricks too. Just need the snow to b***er off so i can finish clearing up the old garage and skipping it. I`m praying the right door pops up on ebay, i`ve said i`ll wait till the end of Jan before buying a new item.
Thing is i cant buy a cerb until the garage is finished, which at least provides some motivation.

right door is perma-closed, its same length as it is wide and there is enought room to do most work.
