So finally managed to get back on Track. Thanks to Mick Gascoyne, I am now going to be the new owner of a superb 2002 4.5 red rose. Just having a few bits done and in ten days or so will be taking a nice leisurely drive from Blackpool down through France back home. While I am over I will also be taking advantage of a ride and drive course - just to sharpen things up, but sooooo loking forward to getting back in a cerb. Just cam across CE02BRA - what do you think too much?

Well done! Not sure about the plate !
Has Micks car had a recent rebuild...? Be v careful if you are taking it on a long jaunt during running in. You dont want to glaze the bores etc. So go b roads not A roads and motorways.

Yup, just enough to run it in - according to dave at Automedon, just pop it into 5th and sit at around 80-90, nice and easy. Get there, oil change then scare the locals.

that running in is the total opposite to what I have been told before by factory, Power and APM (AFAIK). I guess it depends on what engine work has been done.

From memory:-
Don't let it labour for the first 1000 miles.
Keep the revs to 4000 and vary the speed, not motorway driving, up and down the gears. Ater the first 500 miles you can open it up a bit till you get to 1000 miles then drive it normally.

For a top end rebuild I would go the motorway route, cams don't like speed changes till bedded in, a steady speed will reduce the strain on the chains.

To be fair, if the bottom end hasn't been touched then it is a totally different story. Crank bearing surfaces require low load, whereas piston rings need some load to bed in properly and stop the bores glazing.

If it's just had valves, guides, inserts etc then it really doesn't need anything more than a little mechanical sympathy for a while to let / check things settle down properly.

A little more care will be required if it's had cams but they tend to run in quickly.

Apparently according to the chaps from the factory, the aim for the first 1000 miles was and or is to keep the car at 2500 rpm. It is going to be very painful - empty roads from Saint Malo to Bordeaux first light. Still the day after.......

Dave, as good as he is, built the cars. He ran the production line and was not involved, as far as I'm aware, in the development of the engines. I'd get a second opinion, which it sounds like you have. Enjoy it!

At the end of the day, with a two year guarantee by Automedon, I think it would be wise to follow their instructions. Thanks for all the advice.

Groan.

Just found this thread and I feel physical pain!

Look after her Andre and please remember what I said about the buy back offer! Hope to see you and the car before you head South.

Will cherish her. Will not help having had the lights blended in, interior re conolised, alloys refurbed etc. Look foward to a cuppa on the way down and thanks again, unfortunately I do not think I will let a cerbera free for a second time.
