sorry if this has been covered before

Doing a bit winter work on the Cerb (refurbished radiator + diff to come out this weekend also for a refurb) and will be servicing it soon and was wondering what air filters tou all run with?

Had a K&N filter on my Chim and was pleased with that - the Cerb has a foam type one. Is there a K&N filter available for the Cerb..?

thanks in advance

I fitted one of these on mine :

The old filter was filthy, just swapped it straight out with this one.

How much do you think K&N filters are exactly? for any car.

£50 for a subaru, half the size of that one. £70 for a mitsubishi colt. etc etc etc. £64 eye wood.

And once you have bought one it will last the life of the car, so probably save you money in the end!

Didn't realise that Pipercross were making foam filters for the Cerb and at only £17.....that's got to be a better bet than the K&N at over £60.

The foam filter will flow better than the K&N but some of this will be offset by the fact that the K&N has a greater surface area due to being pleated. The foam filters can be cleaned just like the K&N ones and whilst the foam one's may not last a lifetime, you could buy three of these and still be quids in compared to the K&N.

£30 for a panel filter for a mx-5, same price as a pipercross one.

Had the above foam filter on the car when last on the rolling road. It was
fitted as per the instructions and coated with the filter oil supplied which
resembled treacle. The result of removing said filter was to discover the missing
power. (20 plus bhp!!)

Sounds like you over oiled it?

Ideally you take a very small amount of oil, rub it in your hands and then scrunch the filter in your hands very lightly coating it with oil. It would have to have a drastic pp rating to sap 20bhp so it must have been dripping with oil? If anything you don't always need to actually oil a foam filter, I am sure in this state it would be absolutely fine.

I did a lot of tests on filters when I had my Cerb and the difference between a clean standard foam filter and no filter was about 5bhp on the dyno...and that's at about 400bhp. A clogged and dirty filter can make a big difference though upto around 15bhp, so your 20bhp may not be far off.

Jules.

Looks like a Pipercross version of the original foam filter. The original filter isn't made anymore, unless TVR Power still have some? Most have now replaced with either the K&N or an alternative foam filter. When I had my Cerb I did a bit of testing with Joolz on filters and had some alternative foam filters made up, we went single ply but with a dense pp rating and with an egg box outward facing surface to increase surface area. They worked very well and were cheap.

Hmmm...thanks for the replies.

As stated I was pleased with the K&N on the chim as it was removed, cleaned and re oiled when required.

I put a new foam filter on the cerb last year...not sure if its a pipercross or not?

For now think I'll clean up the foam one I have when I do the service.

Interesting though - in the long term I would be interested to know which has the highest air flow vs filtration properties....foam pipercross vs K&N?

I wish I still had the results / graphs but it's foam over the K&N. However, it will only ever be a max of maybe 5-10 bhp at 400bhp, so negligable really. I tested normal std foam, egg box foam (single layer) and K&N. Not tested the Pipercross one but would say it's similar to the std foam filter.

Do you know what 'Moguls' on a ski-slope are? The foam Joo used was like the packing foam you get, about 20mm thick, with Moguls on them. I can't inagine that Joo went to a foam manufacturer and asked them to make a few bits of special air filter foam to his own specification. They were good filters because, compared to flat foam, the Moguls increased the surface area.
