Guys, a couple of months ago I replaced my 1998 4.2 starter motor with one from universal rotating electrics for £243.87. It works fine and spins the engine over easily, the car starts first time every time even after standing for a fortnight. However, I digress, I took the old starter, which I believe to be the original, since it was marked up TVR 4.2 to my local alternator/starter repair man. I went back today and he showed me an exact match which he was returning to the supplier because he did not want it. It has the same power as the Cerb starter, rotates counter clockwise and is in all respects a perfect match, he offered it to me for £100 and with a 12 month warranty, says he would be making a small profit on it. The only snag, if there is one, is that it is made in China as are a huge percentage of modern starters, but at £100 vice £243 or even more depending on where you buy, I think it's a bargain. They are supplied by a company called CARGO who unfortunately do not deal directly with the public. A google search though throws up a shed load of dealers you can go through. The CARGO Part No is JS754, which matches the Nissan Maxima. If you go to Nissan to buy one it will cost a lot more. So my advice is find a friendly alternator/starter motor fixer and obtain through him, he probably won't be looking at doubling or trebling the price.

I purchased one off the net once, £253, lasted all of a fortnight before it ended up in the bin.

The got the original Tilton Supersport one refurbed for £80, and that's still going strong.

Has any one replaced a starter recently, I have been quoted eye watering prices £475 and that is sending mine back for a surcharge for a re con unit, surly there must be some sturdy replacement items on the market for tight fists like me smile

My Bendix gear is destroyed, motor itself still spins fine after I bench tested it.

Going to see a local place after a phone call today, my mates garage have used them to build custom starters for big drift cars will report back if they can over haul it.

But open to any other options please.

Cheers Scott

I have just paid £410 fully fitted for a new starter motor. I did not have time at the moment to replace it myself. PM me if you want details of the garage.
