I've just been down to our local big ASDA and they've got Mobil One 0W-40 in 1 litre bottles for £4.

Thought you guys might appreciate the heads-up...

(they've also got Jaffacake twinpacks 2 for £2, if that's your thing wink )

They're doing 20% off in Halfrauds. I bought 5L of thicker Mobile one for about £38.

They were doing it on all grades of Mobile 1.

Nah, just the 0w-40 in the Mobil One.

They were also doing Mobil Super S 10w-40, Mobil FE and Mobil M, all at the same price but its the Mobil One that's the killer deal.

Can't see it on their website, so I'm afraid so, yes.

Still, with the money you save on the oil you can buy some bleach and brillo pads to decontaminate yourself afterwards.

Is that a myth I wonder? If you have the pressure, is it a problem?

Silkolene Group Buy -Pro-S 5w-40 5L
SKU: SilkolenesGBPRO-S5w-40-5L

sure its 10-40 for Rover based V8's...?

...in fact my car has unusually high oil pressure (70 psi hot @ revs) which, if it is caused by constricted oilways, might mean my car needs thinner oil than the norm. Not all cars are the same(?). I use Mobil1 (whichever grade APM puts in but I top it up with 0w40).

I use Millers Motorsport CFS 15W60 'cos that's what the engine builder recommends (I live by the adagium 'never argue with an engine builder if you expect him to help you out should things go pear shaped at some point' hehe ).

0w-40 is what is stated in my owners manual, but personally I found it made the engine a bit noisy (implying it was too thin)

Had a fairly lengthy discussion with the chap from Opie as to whether its best to go for Mobil One 0w40 or Mobile One 15W50 and the upshot was basically "six of one, half dozen of the other".

I subsequently went for the 15w50, but found that it takes noticably longer to come up to pressure on a cold start (like 1.5-2 seconds longer), so topped up with 0w40 until the next change (yes, it's perfectly fine to mix).

A bit like Winston Churchil and his economists - ask a dozen oil experts for an opinion and you're likely to get at least thirteen answers back!

I get 5w/50 fully synthetic blended by a local(ish) oil supplier, I have to buy it in 25ltr drums but the price is pretty reasonable.

now if only he could get it to smell like Castrol R sperm

You've never had the experience of the fragrance of Castrol R emitting from a hot engine?

my perversion holds no boundaries, hell I've even smeared it onto the manifold upon occasion getmecoat

This is a useful link.

I think that 0-40 is too thin and that it also has too wide a rating (zero to forty) and so it deteriorates too quickly.
15-40 looks like a good compromise although maybe a little too thick for a newly rebuilt engine.
