My gearbox is getting worse, so I either need to recondition it or just get another one, there are a few about at the moment and it would be the cheaper and quicker option I think, so if I just get a normal cosworth 2WD T5 will it fit?

the T5 in the picture on the above page is the one you need.
Note where the stick is at the very end of the tail housing.

I think not, the tail shaft is different. Cossie box has the gear stick right at the end, TVR box has it half way along the tail shaft. Also TVR use a Chevrolet output spline which is different to the cossie.

Internally I think they're the same, so maybe a bit of jiggery pokery might get you some where, although I can remember there are two types of T5 box, standard and world class, something about bearing sizes springs to mind.

If it was me, I'd have Bernie the gearbox man rebuild it, Competition Transmission in Hertfordshire.

I'm cetain you need the one with the stick at the end (as in the gearboxman picture)
that eBay one isn't any good, wrong stick position.
Bell Mat at SP tommorrow, he's got one out of his Cerb in the workshop.
Though I'd put money on it being the one I first mentioned.

Nope, thats a Tuscan box, shifter located at the front of the tailshaft no good either. Cerbie's have the gear shifter in the middle of the tailshaft, Cossies have it at the back of the tail shaft. smile

Here's a pic of my old engine, note the position of the shifter.

Rich.

Hi

When I had my 'box out recently I discovered it was a "World Class". My car is a '96 model so I would guess we all had WC 'boxes.

See here for ID method. It was the writing on the counter gear cover which gave it away on mine.

Rich.
Maybe just the Tailshafts are different, and the actual Gearbox is the same. Although after reading Ed's post, the internals could well be different as well!
Aren't we all total fking Nerds biggrin

You would have thought that as I have my engine out at the moment after replacing a snapped crank I would have gone into the garage and checked first:

Olton Transmissions, google it. He has rebuilt my Tremec TKO 600 (BIG T5), had him install bronze shifter pads, ditching the standard nylon ones, much much better. But the price was way way cheaper than anywhere else. Does a few T5's for the Cossie boys in the area. So knows them. Ask for Del.

You could use the ebay one and swap the tailhousing. Not a job for a novice though.

Also, Cossie, TVR Chim and Cerbera boxes are different due to the input shaft. I'm pretty sure the Chim and Cossie use a 10 tooth, similar to Mustangs and the later Cerbera and T cars use the 23 spline. It's also used in a 300ZX but the ratios are different and I think the output shaft differs.

Guess who else blew a gearbox..... laugh

Sorry slightly O/T but where is the breather located on the T5? Could someone highlight it in the pics? Is it the little black thing at the top of the tailhousing joint aft of the top plate cover?

Cossie boxes are 1" 23 spline inputs which is the same as using in the Rover V8s, dunno about AJPs. The guy who fitted a Chim 4l in to his 240z used a Cossie T5, just swapped the bellhousings. The T5 used in the 300ZX (earlier Z31 model) is a Non-World Class version, so no where near strong enough. That has a very long 1" 24 spline input (standard Nissan) with a 3.35 first gear ratio. I looked at swapping in the input from a Cossie T5 in to a Z31 T5 but apart from the different gear it also uses a different bearing set up so was a complete no go. Annoying as I'd got hold of a T5 bell housing to match my 240z Engine, still got that in the shed and no 240z on the drive anymore!

Cheers,
Rob
