Hello and good afternoon all, hopefully someone can provide some advice or guidance.

Last year I would sometimes get a spinning noise when attempting to start the Cerb but it would not actually crank over until the 2nd/3rd attempt, until christmas eve and I was collecting the childrens hidden christmas presents from relatives and it decided it would just spin and not fire.

I have used the Cerb a couple of times since with more and more difficulty. Fortunately it gave up in the garage at home but my garage is set to the rear of my property with ltd access and on a small incline, ltd access means no tow out and no AA vans etc.

Upon trawling various posts I decided to renew the starter, this was fitted by me yesterday and when attempting to start the car it just clunked (once not continuously), no spinning no turning over, everything connected back up etc (I think!), took it on the chin and presumed the battery may have given up and not enough power to turn the car over so I have replaced this today and still nothing just a clunk. cry Prior to new year, all was well, the Cerb was running perfectly etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions??? Have I missed something or are there big issues ahead???

Thanks in advance all, regards Craig.

You could have a duff new starter. It happened to me. Old starter gave up the ghost. Stuck a brand new one on(Not a reckon)and had the same problem. A third starter cured the problem. The other possible is worn ring gear.

Have you double checked you screwed the wires back on correctly?

Thanks both for replying, biggrin the starter was apparently new from a company in Basildon, Essex selling via Ebay. rolleyes

Now i am mechanically inept so if the ring gear has gone is this a specialist only job and does anyone have an indication of cost?

Secondly regarding wires being on the wrong way round if i recall there was only a plug and then 2 wires which are held on via a nut, surely if contact is there it should be ok, or have i left something important off?

thanks again Craig.

The "New" Starters on EBay are renowned for not lasting long at all.

I believe there is one for a Nissan QX that fits and seems to do the job.

The other option is if you still have the original send it to Leven for a rebuild, had mine done a few months ago and all is well now.

Take the starter motor out, so it isn't engaging with anything, wedge/hold it firmly, and get someone else to 'start' the car and just confirm the motor works OK. Connect your old motor to a battery and confirm that that one works as well. If they both work, then something else is amiss. I'm afraid I have no idea what though frown
Get in touvh with the seller and tell him what is happening as well.

The new one has a 12 month warranty if that really means anything, I wouldn't mind so much but it has not even started the car once let alone not lasting long curse

Gruffalo do you have a rough indication of Levens refurb cost? didn't want to pay out too much more at the moment if avoidable or at least on this problem.

But 1st issue in 2 years so not all bad.(Touches wood)

Also does anyone no a way of testing the starter at home, so I can establish this as being the issue and not the ring gear?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks for this it seems to be taking me 20 mins plus to post so crossed with my previous question (slow laptop tonight), i will try that asap. Probaly tomorrow now, thanks all for the input so far, just want to get back out, having missed some nice weather the last few days it has been frustrating to not just jump in and go.

Craig.

I had the EXACT same problem on mine. You will see on various posts that this fault can be down to a bad engine earth which the cerb is notorious for. Run a seperate large earth cable from the Negative terminal of the battery direct to one of the fixing bolts on the starter. never had a problem since wink

Cost £380 fitted by STR8SIX in Oxfordshire, it was the 4th starter that actually worked, I think the charges about £120 for the labour so I guess the starter was £260.

They also recified a wiring problem between the control boxes in the boot and the starter, hasn't missed a beat since. (touching wood again)

You could try the Nissan one, comes witha 12 month warranty so if any thing goes wrong you will be covered for that long at least but then it is Japanesse so I wouldn't expect it to go wrong.

Try this thread, they are probably offering the Nissan units that are actually made in China as most are now days.

Hello all thanks to everyone who contributed to my original post, sorry i have not come back to this but family and work have taken priority.

Ok, so problem still exists, tested both starters off the car and fine, as said the original just span up (hence replacement) and the replacement seemed as if it could not turn under load, I exchanged the starter a couple of weeks ago and fitted last weekend. (This was tested underload by the supplier)

I have then been waiting for replacement injector o rings as a couple had perished and decided they would leak fuel when ignition turned on. Managed to put everything together yesterday and nothing car will not turn over still.

Previously tried earthing directly from battery negative to starter and no change.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Again the car was fine previously apart from the starter spinning.

WIth Regards Craig (frustrated)

If your car has been sat for a while, do you know if the battery is still fully charged?

As others have said as well, check the earths.

Try a different battery, one that you know for sure is good.

Hi, old battery was fine and put a brand new one on when changing the starter as i thought this may have been the problem when i 1st fitted the replacement starter, may have to go through any relevant earthing points, can someone direct to where these may be???

Thanks Craig..

There is an earthing point on the chassis close to the oil filter ( pas. side ), its easy to see if you look in from the wheel arch.
