Tappet adjustment help on AJP please

Hi, ive just removed my cam shaft to adjust the tappet shims on my 4.2 AJP, and ive found the inlet shim on cylinder number 1 is only 1.39 mm thick and the clearance is .005 thou.

Ive had a quick look on some tvr parts web sites and i cant find any thinner shimes, so what can i do to increase the clearance gap ?

i want to set the Inlets to .010 thou so i need to double the clearance setting

any ideas on how i can do this ?

Use a micrometer and file down the shim to the desired size. That's what I did.

if your shim is 1.39mm thick and you have a 5 thou gap, but need a 10thou gap you will need to reduce the shim thickness to 1.265mm, so as already mentioned file or grind the shim down to the required thickness.

1mm = 39 thou, so near as dammit, 5thou = .125mm

Wont fileing the shim prematurley wear the camshaft? will it need a polish too?

thanks for help guys, ive got a large selection of dimond stones, so i will give fileing it down a go,

The shim fits under a cam follower and doesnt come into direct contact with the cam, so as long as is filed down flat and true , there should be no problem with wear on the cam shaft.

just a quick update for all those following this post

i got a medium rough and fine dimond sharpening stone and mircometer, and filed down my tappet shimes with ease.

all being well my Cerb should be back on the road for the weekend, i carnt wait
