Oil Pressure after changing oil?
Discussion
I filled the new oil filter with oil before fitting, filled the engine with oil.
I am cranking the engine over on the starter motor, with the fuel pump fuse out, to get some pressure.
I have done this several times now, but not seeing the gauge needle rise at all, now i'm not sure if it does normally when cranking, or if it only rises when the engine catches? or is it a case of judging when there is sufficient pressure by the oil light going out, which to be honest I want paying attention to!

Cranking the engine over with out the fuel is not really going to help anything as you still have compression and therefore will not be able to spin the engine over fast enough to get oil pressure up.
Just start it, oil clinging to the metal inside the engine will prevent any wear happening.

I had this when I changed my oil, but I left the filter off for a day before I refilled so I had to back fill the oil pump by pouring oil down the hose from pump to filter.
It wouldn't show any pressure on the gauge from just the stater spinning the engine over but when I put the fuse back in and started it I got oil pressure after about 1 second.
Try starting it for a couple of seconds and watch the gauge.

I just started it for 2/3 seconds, but still no oil pressure, getting a bit worried now, going to leave it for a while then start it for 5 secs, if I still get nothing guess I will need to try something else.
I also made the mistake of leaving the engine to drain for several days, thought just filling the new filter with oil would be good enough.

Disagree with ya there mate. Crank any engine over and you should get oil pressure within a couple of seconds. My own Cerbera shows pressure on the gauge and the oil light goes out almost immediately.Edited by mikethebike1127 on Sunday 21st March 15:19
Eric it sounds like you did what I did. The oil may have drained out of the oil pump. Try it again, if still no joy then try unscrewing the union at the oil filter and pouring oil down the pipe to the oil pump ( the one that goes to the oil cooler ). This takes quite a while to make its way down.
If you still get no pressure after this then you will have to remove the oil pressure relief spring and push as much vasaline up into the oil pump as you can and then start it.
Hopefully you will get oil pressure next time you start it without having to do any of the above.

I was alluding to the issue of just dosconecting the fuel fuse does't really help in reducing wear as you still have compression, and if you relly want to spin the engine on the starter you need to take the plugs out but I didn't make that clear at all did I.

early engines are notorious for this if you have the sump with 2 drains and the oil pipe screwing onto the side of the sump you need to undo the pipe and pressure feed the hose till you read pressure on the gauge then reconnect the hose and start the engine that should sort it as an aside on cerbs when doing oil changes refill imediatly dont leave as the pump drains and struggles to reprime HTHI also made the mistake of leaving the engine to drain for several days, thought just filling the new filter with oil would be good enough.

I do indeed have an early engine with the twin drain plugs. Which end of the pipe do I remove (cant visualise the layout right now as i'm not near the car), sump end or the other? also how would I pressure feed the hose?
Cheers.

the pie that comes off the filter and screws into the side of the sump i use air pressuried oil feed to do it
andy
So do you detach and pressurise from the sump or filter end of the oil hose?andy
This is probably a bit of a dumb question, one of those things I'm sure I know, but have a nagging feeling I might be wrong!
So to avoid any confusion of Near side/offside/upper/lower etc etc, lets start with the Oil filter. Does the Oil flow....
Oil Filter -> Engine -> Oil Cooler -> Oil Filter?

are you using a branded oil filter ?
Just asking, as I had similar experience, zero pressure with a halfords oil filter. When changed to known make no problem, I suspect the 1st one had a manf. fault?
Its one of these, suposed to be an equivalent for the Land Rover filter that I replaced.Just asking, as I had similar experience, zero pressure with a halfords oil filter. When changed to known make no problem, I suspect the 1st one had a manf. fault?
