AJP Oil Breather - Remote Tank?
Discussion
Having spent a fair bit of time lying on my back on the garage floor ...scraping and cleaning the underside of my Cerbera chassis...it suprised me with just how much oil and general muck there was on the chassis and bodywork...
A mate who knows about these things reckons that a lot of the crud can be attributed to the oil breather pipe which goes into the drivers side airbox..then drops out of the bottom..
Anyone put in a remote tank to collect the oil, as opposed to having it go into the airbox? Just wondered what (if any) solutions or suggestions there are for this..
And yes I know that AJP always tend to leak a little oil...just trying to cover one of the bases...thanks in advance..

Look good all the same...I tend to replace stuff with stainless..the cam covers have been done in a deep TVR purple...replacing all the bolts for stainless...will post some piccies up of the stuff I have done at some point...
This oil cather tank sounds like an idea..be good if we can find the thread..
Your car is coming along a treat like the lights..

I did look into this, however the oil seems to protect the chassis :-)
Ahh ..it does the central section...but the powder coating on the rest of my 99 cerb appeared to have the protection of emulsion!Still be worth looking into...gonna leave the chassis with POR15 covered with smooth hammerite...might use a bit of waxoil on top of the outriggers..
I fitted a catch can a while ago. I used one of the rectangular aluminium types, turned it on its side and drilled it to fit a hose take off. It connects to the cam case outlet via a 90 degree silicon tube. I fitted larger take offs on what was the top of the can to feed into the airboxes via some bling stainless covered hose.

I've done this too. Pic below:

If you want more pics, go to http://rides.webshots.com/album/212016964dytUsY and have a dig around. Thr breather is baffled inside and contains stainless steel heavy duty wool. Works a treat and no more issues with oily intakes.

Hi both thnaks for your replies...
Am I correct in thinking that you still have pipes feeding the airboxes with the vapourised oil?
The oil collects in the tanks and you periodically drain it off?
Did you both buy off the shelf cans and modify them?
Obvioiusly need to make a bracket to hold can in place..where do you take this from?
thanks Steve

I think the racers all run them due to throttle bodies being used with no proper air boxes. I also have one on my SC Chim. The vapour is sucked through back into the charger inlet and the crud/oil falls out into the tank where it stays till service time. It generally takes around 4-5k miles to collect 1cm of oil in the bottom so it doesn't collect very much. Worth doing though I would say. I'll be running one on the race car for sure.
Yes, the crank gases are drawn into both airboxes in order to complete the circuit. This is after the oil droplets have been removed by the baffles and steel wool in the catch can - last time I had the airboxes off there was only the slightest hint of oil on the adapters that feed the airbox and the throttles were bone dry.
I did try to vent it to atmosphere in the engine bay but you end up with an oily mess - the stuff gets everwhere. Recirculating into the airboxes is the best solution I reckon.
I had some custom ali parts made from SM Engineering - since I removed the aircon during my rebuild the catch can can sit where the aircon pump used to be. If you have aircon you need to be more inventive! Good luck with it, I think it is a worthwhile mod and is simple to acheive.

The catch can was a cheap ali one on ebay.
The bracket is a piece of ali angle bolted to the mounting bracket that came with the catch can. It mounts on the end of the cam cover as shown below.
I used expensive heavy screw fittings for the air boxes. If I was to do it again I'd probably use hose takes offs. I think the screw fittings were really just for a bit of engine bay bling along with the stainless covered hose.
(I really should get a nice bracket made up - looks a bit agricultural
)

Thanks for this...mine has aircon...so will have to scratch my head a bit...good explanation though appreciated, looks like I will be doing this then...I did try to vent it to atmosphere in the engine bay but you end up with an oily mess - the stuff gets everwhere. Mines a 4.5 so different airbox config...thnik that is the aircon pully thing next to where you have put the box...so I could use the same mounting point...just need to get the right size box...was speaking to Jason @ TVRPower about doing this yesterday..which was useful too....will have a look on ebay for starters..
Top Stuff thanks again..
Mike
Further to above..I have been looking for the same tank on ebay...can only find oblong ones that are "tall" as opossed to ones like yours..which sort of sits on its side..do you still have the details of where you got it from?

I got one of the tall ones and swapped the drain plug with the right angle fitting for the 'sight glass'. Just pull the plastic tube out of the fitting and cut it to fit.
Ahh ....wish I knew this before trolling thru five pages of the things on ebay last night...doh!Thanks Mike looks like I will be following your route then..if you don't mind that is!
Cheers
Steve
