Dipped Beam Issue

A few weeks ago i was on my way back home (at night) and i could smell a burning smell, I found it was very strong in the boot but as it was dark and the boot light only comes on when it feels like it, I could'nt see where. The next time i went out, no burning smell. A few weeks later I am driving home at night and it looks like i have got no lighting what so ever. So i check and it appears only my side lights are coming on and they are very very dim, however full beam still works and is very bright. Next day I investigate to find this.



After this i scrape off the affected pins in the connectors and spray a little wd40 in there for good measure and this seems to fix both the issue with the side lights being dim and dipped beam comes back. It seems however, that when using dipped beam the wire gets hot at the pins, side lights have no adverse affects. So the question is do you think the control box is faulty or is it just that those 2 pins got corroded, which caused the resistance to rise, meaning that they got and do get very hot.

I have the old style lights by the way.

What blubs have you got in your car, when I bought my cerb i had the same problem, found that someone had put 90w bulbs in to try and overcome the poor lighting with the standard 55/65w bulds this melted my dim/dip relay connectors, had to get a new dim/dip relay and fit the proper h4 55/65w bulbs.

Thanks man, I'll find out what bulbs are in, never thought of that. Only Had the car six months and i've not had to change a bulb, so i've got no idea.

Whether it is the bulbs or not, this is (scarily) quite a common thing. It has happened to my car (later style pod lights), and I've read about it a number of times on here before. It's not uncommon for people to modify the wiring loom so that the lights get a feed straight from the battery that works off a relay from the lighting circuit.

A previous owner had put 100/80w bulbs in. GRRRRRRR
