New noise - Riddle me this.

Just had the car serviced and now have a new noise to deal with and can't for the life of me see what it is.

Noise emanates from the rear of the car and the frequency of the noise increases as the car goes faster (so wheel / drive train based).
The noise is audible over the sound of a V8 + Sports exhaust (so not quiet) and sounds like metal skimming on metal

I had new disks at the service ... but noise is definitely from rear wheels area!

Perhaps a list of these jobs might help to identify it if it's related.

Good point - and thanks for making me look because I now see I did get a set of new rear brake pad pins on the bill:

Here's the bits from the receipt:
- 12k Service + valve clearances
- Replace coolant pipes
- Front brakes, disks and pads
- 1 x rear exhaust mount
- 1 set of rear brake pad pins

Could the rear pad pins have something to do with it?

From what you have had done i would have a strong guess and say that the exhaust is slightly touching the chassis. Ive had it many times where some work has been done that has required the exhaust to be touched,and resulted in the same noised you are getting. Some slight priseing with a bar should sort it.

I'd say its your rear brake pads rattling around. To confirm this gently press the brake peddle whilst moving and see if the sound stops, if so you'll need to silicon the pads in.

It's possible that the small springs that hold the rear brake pads apart, and off the discs, are broken or missing.

Mine broke and I got rattles rather than squealing.

When i fitted new rear discs mine developed a noise, the machining of the new disc faces was slightly off centre, i put a chamfer on the inside edge of the pad and this sorted it.

If they've replaced the handbrake shoe pins then it is likely that they could have adjusted the handbrake. What you could be hearing is the shoes scrapping the drum as you go along.

I had something similar and it turned out to be the rear brakes rattling - new pads / springs sorted it.

I've had the exhaust banging on the chassis - this is more noticeable when cornering and doesn't give the more "regular beat" that the rear brakes did....
