Yes, use Kiley Clinton in Birmingham instead. I've had four rebuilds on my Griff rack in total and Kiley did a far superior job to any of the others.JensenA said:

The first was by Greenwich to resolve excessive play, the rack lasted eleven months and then an oil seal failed catastrophically. They rebuilt it again and it lasted a month before dumping it's entire contents on the road! My third rebuild was by Western and it came back leaking mildly from day one. Throughout those three rebuilds I didn't have full assistance to the left due to scoring picked up on the first rebuild.I spoke to Kiley Clinton as they offer all manner of 'proper'engineering services such as hard chroming and grinding etc. One of their guys did his apprenticeship at Burman (a rack manufacturer) and they seem to know what they are on about.
He explained that the reason they keep failing it twofold. First, you've got a steel pump running in iron and second the flexible pipes break down internally. However carefully you flush the system and rebuild the rack this detritus gets carried around and attacks the new seals from the inside. This detritus is running at 100 degrees and a few thousand PSI.
They make two modifications to the Griff rack due to it's poor design. They bore out the end cap and housing to accept an o-ring so the high pressure side isn't relying solely on thread locker to seal. The second one is secret, I've been asked not to say what it is but it improves the feel
They advised that I replace all the flexible lines which I did and suggested I fit a filter in the return line. I managed to find an ATF filter which seems to be doing a good job.
I can and do recommend Kiley Clinton for the reasons above, I wouldn't recommend the other companies based on my experiences.
Confused, the title is steering rack refurb but the OP mentions the possibility of replacing with an electric one. The steering pump can be replaced with an electric one from a Saxo but I have never heard of a rack replacement other than the standard unit. The pump appears to be a range rover unit ERR5407 which can be had for change out of £100 although I think the pulley may need changing over.

I was interested to know if anyone thought the electric pump worked better, I still have to have the rack refurbed.Sorry to confuse.
