checking oil today and my dipstick snapped! luckily it was part way out at the time and it had snapped at the top, rather than being stuck in...

I'm aralditing it together at the moment but I doubt that is going to hold. So I need to order a new one.
Doing a search on tvrgear brings back the following:
Category:

Cerbera - OLIVE (DIPSTICK) TVR Official Part

Category - Engine
£1.50 GBP

Category:

Cerbera - ADAPTOR (DIPSTICK) TVR Official Part

Category - Engine
£14.81 GBP

What the hell have olives got to do with anything? I could just order them both, but I'm not confident that either of them is the actual dipstick.

Can I drive without the dipstick in or is it going to spray oil around my engine bay? Or should I just shove it in anyway and just makes sure I can get it out with some needlenose pliers.

Why do these things always happen on a Sunday when everywhere is closed?

Isn't the olive a 'washer' type thingi (technical term), at the entrance of the dipstick hole, thats acts as a guide for the dipstick to slot in?

I suspect the 'olive' is the washer thingy that goes on the dipstick near the handle so that it stays in the tube....may be wrong but an 'olive' is used to seal unions on water pipes....my guess is the second bit is the right bit....how bout putting the top part of your dipstick in and taping it in place...this should stop oil...(which id doubt would find its way up such a long thin tube)..from coming out till you have the replacement...

The latter I'm afraid. It's a mistake that most people make once...

satman. Your technical terms are the same as mine...except you can spell correctly.

That's the current plan, although the old man is pottering over in his MG with a couple he had laying about the place, so we'll try those to see if they fit before I try the gaffa tape option.

Regarding the tvrgear site, the second one is the list calls it an adaptor? I'd just call it a dipstick myself, if that is what it actually was...

I'll call topcats tomorrow.

Current solution, my dad has a golf dipstick in his rover V8, I have a rover V8 dipstick in my cerb and a broken cerb dipstick in the boot along with some needlenose pliers, should I need to check the oil.

Now, just to find out what the lead time is on a new dipstick, I'll be optimistic and guess 4 months

Anybody know where I can get a dipstick from

TVR want £100 as apparently I need to adapt it to a 4.5 level indicator Now, I refuse to order 4 different parts, totalling £100 to replace a small stick of metal. I'd rather make one myself, thanks very much...

... Well, what I'd rather do is get hold of a 4.2 dipstick but douglas valley don't have one, anywhere else I can try?

no joy at either breaker.

I suppose I could take some comfort in the fact that this seems to be a common problem with the 4.2 dipstick and not just me being a gumbi monkey handed gorilla.

Stay tuned for the definitive "How to fix your broken 4.2 dipstick for less than the price of a 2 bed in Harlow" guide.

1) Do you drive past any garages that may have a welder? If so ask them if they can weld it back together for you.

2) Have you got a metal coat hanger, permenant marker, cork and tube of liquid rubber?

1) I have a father who has a welding kit in the garage, but the handle has a brass coating/section, which we had problems welding to. A proper go is on the cards after todays ringing round though.

2) I have duct tape, a couple of air filters, a battery and a carboard box. Enough to replenish the oxygen in an Apollo craft travelling 30000mph, 200 miles in the sky, but not something as complex as the common dipstick.

Current thoughts are to drill a couple of small holes in the olive/cap/cover/whatever you want to call it, that will run either side of the dipstick. Weld a couple of thin strips of metal to the top of the dipstick (small enough to still get in the hole) Slide the cap and handle over and weld the two strips to the handle.
Bobs your uncle, fannys your aunt, brass is bypassed and dipstick is rock solid.

Pictures are difficult at the moment, but it has broken where the handle joins the dipstick, flush with the inside of the olive/cap/cover/whatever you want to call it.
