Has anyone tried running 18" spider wheels (all round) with 40mm profile tyres with Nitrons? Presumably I could adjust the ride height with those tyres on to prevent any rubbing?

thanks,

Darren.

I've tried it, inadvertently, because the tyre fitters put 225/40's on the front. They rubbed on the inside of the wheel arch on full lock.

So I switched them for 225/35's which don't rub which has left me with a pair of brand new 225/'40's in the shed!

That was before I got Nitrons though, so maybe when my 35's wear out I'll raise the height a bit and put the old 40's back on. Unless you want to buy them off me?!

I will have in 2 weeks if you can wait that long!

[Disclaimer: That's assuming that p*ssing speed camera last night had no film in it, otherwise the Cerb might have to go]

When I had 40 profiles on the front, it wasn't just the height that was the problem, it was the tyre wall rubbing as well, so I've now got 35mm front, and 40mm rear.

I'm trying to decide how best to spend the next chunk of the Cerbie fund. The options are:

1) Wheels and tyres from the factory
2) 2nd hand wheels (Tuscan front/rear and 40 profile all round), then fitting Nitrons all round and shaving the rear wheel arches so they fit. Cost = 500 quid more than the above (so effectively a set of Nitrons for 500 quid).
3) New wheels and Nitrons = 700 quid more than option 2.

If I can be convinced that option 2 will work, it sounds like the way to go (as I'm a tight Yorkshire man) and will have some spare cash for the ECU upgrade later!

edited to add: Unless you want to sell me yours James when that scamera ticket comes through

James - I'd be interested to hear how you get on. I'd like to run Pirelli P Zero Corsa's this year and they only come in 225/40/18 for the front. I can get the 255/35/18 rear OK. I think a 40 profile front will work better but that's no good if it doesn't fit! Also what ride height are you running on the car?

Cheers,
Washy

DJ, I was going for front Nitrons only, with the rear anti-roll bar taking off. I'm currently pondering Nitrons all round, though. That and 2nd hand spiders might be an option for you?

Currently, the suspension's factory spec. I tried 225/40 Proxes on the front, and they really rubbed. The 225/35 fronts and 245/40 rears are fine, though.

I did consider that (and still am doing). However, I've got a noisy shock on the back (still works perfectly but clunks occasionally) so I was going to get the set. I'm hoping that the adjustability of the Nitrons will be able to prevent the problems you had on 40's. The rubbing on full lock can be avoided by adding spacers and I'd imagine a harder than standard spring and 5mm raised height on the front could prevent it bottoming out on 40's. However, if I knew that for sure it'd make the decision much easier.

If you use tuscan fronts all round you probably wont have to shave the rear arches .The Toyo 40s seem to be a higher profile than everybody elses 40s and do not always clear the bodywork on the rear.I have 225/40 on the front with nitrons and lowered and no bodywork clearance problems . I have removed the rear anti-roll bar and made brackets to mount the shocks more upright which combined with nitrons uprated springs has given me a very hard ride so will revert to standard springs when my spanners thaw out , David

That's good enough for me, I'll get it booked in! The wheels I've been offered are Tuscan front/rear so it will need some arch shaving. I've just got to convince HHC that they want to do it now (unless anyone else could suggest anywhere 'up north').

David - Sorry to be a pain but what ride height are you running on the front with those 225/40's? I've got 18inch Spiders, Nitrons and lowered ride height (110mm).

I run 40 on the back with 35's on front (potenza) With
nitrons. Only hikup i had was slight rubbing on rear on hard cornering, Answer was to put front wheels on rear because the spacer is smaller. That is front wheels all round with 40 on back and 35 on front

Women like it to. A long hard forgiving ride that handles the bends like harpic

I have a gap of about half inch from the top of the tyre to the wheelarch. When I adjusted it I was just aiming for an even gap all round the tyre, David

David - that's pretty low then. Guess I'll just have to see how it goes. Thanks.

I'd aim for keeping the chassis level not an even gap round the tyre, you'll screw the handling otherwise.
