Has anyone upgraded the earlier carbon style a-pillars to the newer body-coloured ones?

Do you know where I can get hold of a pair of the body-coloured style?

Cheers

If you get hold of a newer set I'll have the carbon ones off you!

Are the early and later ones not different shapes and sizes? Desperate for a set for my 2000 LW, one missing and other cracked.

I have seen one Mk1 Cerb with the later style A pillar covers. I suspect that these were still the earlier ones but were painted over the 'carbon fibre'.
Seems a shame to lose the originality of this feature.
The Mk2 cars have a taller screen so I suspect that the later trims might be too tall for the Mk1 cars.

I'll let you know Eric.

Does anyone know whether the newer ones are exactly the same profile as the carbon ones or whether the design was improved at all?

Cheers

The ones on ebay seem to have gone..

Looks like I better get making some if the old girl is going to be out for the summer.

Oops - didnt realise question was already answered. Surprised to hear that later cars had larger screen.

Does anyone know whether the later ones catch the window as much when the door is opened via the pull handle. The carbon ones cover the window significantly at the top (and are still crap at keeping the wind out). If the door is opened without the window dropping it damages the carbon ones. Just wondering whether they found a more successful way of doing it on later cars.

I've had my A-pillars and window rubber changed a couple of times over the years and it still gets noisy at high speed. I recently had a Scirocco TSI hire car (nice surprise as I'd ordered a Mondeo!) - it has a frameless window like the Cerb, but the rubbers are a lot deeper (i.e. more rubber on both sides of the window) and go all the way round - thinking of trying to mod the Cerb with a different profile rubber to improve it. Anyone done this?

By the way I am the OP (used an old login for original post).

Cheers
Rich

Whether the window hits the trim is largely a factor of how the glass has been aligned in its carrier (fore and aft). If the glass is towards the front of the car it will catch badly. This can be changed by removing the door trim, loosening the bolts holding the glass and sliding it back a little.

Isnt the wind noise generally comes from the Scirocco sourced wing mirrors...?

The roof/screen height did not change on the later cars, the only difference is the roll cage where it passes across the top of the windscreen was reduced in diameter in the later cars giving a larger aperture/view of the road.

The later A pillar covers are definitely a different shape despite being the same length.

Has anyone else seen a 96 4.2 with matt painted A pillar and rear screen trims, don’t know if someone has just pained over mine in Matt paint, or if my car was a pre-production model?

yes I think the noise that sounds like trickling sand is caused by the groove where the mirror housings join together.

My 96 4.2 had matt black trims, I think all/most of the very early cars did, then they switched to carbon, then to the larger design as has been mentioned. Mine are now painted to match the car, looks much smarter imho.

Thanks all for your responses.

Does anyone know if there is someone knocking out the newer shape fibreglass ones? I could do with getting my hands on some and modding if necessary - prefer that body coloured look and hopefully will help fix the wind issues.

not as far as I can tell... They are more robust so it doesn't seem as bad when you have to do it.

I can see some evidence on my later cerb of the window having touched the pillar covers in the past. I have never pulled the red handle on any of my cerbs but suspect that the later ones would be marginally less damaged by doing so.

Plasticman is the person you need to do this for you. Might be worth seeing how many people are interested and getting a group buy perhaps?

Just a thought....smile
