Number plate question

When my car was MOT'd last month, the tester mentioned the rear number plate and said that it was now illegal to have a honeycomb plate, but as I understand it, the Cerb has to have a honeycomb plate as it is backlit. Does anyone know if there are any other types of plate that we can use?

You can get non-honeycombed plates that are translucent. Just make sure you ask for them to be translucent - ie without the foil backing. I wouldn't worry about it.

My understanding is that the requirement isn't retrospective so old ones are still a pass but you can't fit new honeycomb plates.

Yep, pretty sure that's it - there was another discussion on this - possibly in the Chimaera section where some helpful chappie even put a link to the section in question on the MOT Testers reference thingy.

The bottom bit is the relevent one, cars registered before 2001 can run Honeycomb plates.

The backlit plates are also still legal but they must be translucent to let the light through 'ordinary' plares will not suffice.

Yes I always use Fancy plates and being in Ireland there is no problem with log books and the like!
