connecting the laptop

Im trying to connect the laptop and run the diagnostic software but its saying the ecu is not connected. I have the laptop connected to the ecu via a usb to serial lead that i got from maplins.

anybody got any wisdom on this

As well as the ign. being on the immob needs to be deativated otherwise it won't connect. Took me a while to work that one out. You also need to ensure the port on the laptop you are using is set to comm1

Fire up the laptop and the software.
Turn on the ign
press the button to turn off the immobiliser - i.e. the car has to be ready to start

Voila it all fires into life. (I spent ages working this out when I first got the car).

Still no joy. Ign on, immob off, laptop connected, port set to com1, still getting the message cannot open serial port. I'm gonna end up throwing the laptop off the wall

So if you press the start button will the engine start? - just to confirm the immobiliser is really off.

If it's an old Laptop with a serial port, I always have to do this...

Have everything connected
Go into Device Manager (right click My Computer > Manage)
Right Click on Com1, unninstal
Scan for Hardware changes....that should find it

Do you have windows7 in your laptop? That will give you some problems running the software.

The software expects by default to be using Com1. You can change the ports in the software but it's easier to ensure the serial port on your laptop is com1.

Or are you using a USB to serial?


Assuming XP, right click my computer, select system properties (or press windows key and break together)

Pick the hardware tab, then device manager.
Hit the plus sign on Ports to expand that section and see what Com ports you have.
If you have something on Com1 and you're USB to serial isn't Com1 then:

Right click on Com1, select properties.
Choose the Port Settings tab, and the advanced button.
Change the Com Port number to something else.

Repeat for the USB to serial device, changing the Com port to Com1.

Otherwise let me know. I think we have a few old dell 510 laptops at work we could 'dispose of'.

Engine will start if I press start, I tried, immobiliser Id defo off. My lapy is windows 7 but I tried my mates also with vista and still no joy. My last thought was that maybe there is a problem with the ecru talking but I hope I'm jumping the gun and I can get a lapy with direct serial and xp on it.

Try to right click on the ECUDIAGS.exe file and then choose properties. In the properties window choose compability and choose windows xp or windows 98 (the software is made for win 98).
