engine problem help!
Discussion
took the cerb out for a drive, doing 30mph in 4th gear then sudden rattling noise and oil pressure dropped to 20 on the gauge.pulled over and killed engine, had it recovered to local indie he will look at it on tuesday, any body got any ideas what it could be.
crapping myself at the mo
any input appreciated
anthony
ps
it's a 4.2 with an engine rebuild by factory in 2004 and has done 8000 since then.

Sudden rattling doesn't sound good - can you be a bit more descriptive with the sound? Also, what revs were you doing and did the car start running poorly? 20 lbs oil pressure is a bit low, but not necessarily disastrous. Was this 20lbs at tick over - if so, what does you engine normally show?
Fingers crossed.

It's odd, but usually those sorts of breakages occur under low load. I remember years ago returning from having thrashed my poor Triumph Spitfire to within an inch of it's life along a really bumpy, twisty B road. I got home and as I turned into the parking spot the front upright snapped (at about 1 mph)
Sometimes the loads that we feel we are imposing on things aren't those that the object actually feels. It may be that the crank is subject to a particularly poor harmonic imbalance at a certain engine speed.
I was speaking to Jason at TVR Power about cranks only the other day Apparently, as well as the early small journal cranks which suffered catastrophic failure, some of the early 2.5" ones weren't too clever either He tells me that the first ones (with smaller counterweights) can crack around the big end journals.
Having said all that, hopefully for the OP it's nothing of the sort! Keep us posted.

Anthony, sorry to hear the news; I understand that your Indie is removing the engine, but have you considered who's going to rebuild it?
Having just rebuilt my own engine and uncovered and remedied the horrors created by a previous "expert" I would want to ensure that the work was done by someone who has a really credible reputation for building these engines. Off the top of my head, APM, Austec Straight8, or TVR Power.
Alternatively, do it yourself and you'll know what's been done!

doesn't look good, engines coming out next tuesday but the indie i use has done a bit of investigation and the chain at the front of the engine is loose! also the main crank wheel can be rotated by hand 1mm either way, so not looking good

Anthony...echo what I said on the regional forum....really sorry to hear of this..thought yours had sorted engine in her too...good luck with it...give me a bell if you think I can help in any way.anthony

Before my crank snapped I would hear a knocking noise, like a CVJ was on the way out, when turning left off islands (I spent the weeks before the big bang driving round in circles in the local car parks trying to work out which one was failing) In fact the crank took the spacer off one of the shells when coming off an island and the engine made a lot more than a rattling noise! I thought I had blown the big ends due to a oil failure at the time.
Fingers crossed your rattling noise is not that bad.

well a bit of an update on engine
the camshaft has snapped! do not know why yet but it's snapped near to the chain, there are three tiny holes drilled into it 120' degrees apart, it's snapped across where the holes are.any ideas?
anthony
What you need then sir is someone then with a good set of 4.2 cams. the camshaft has snapped! do not know why yet but it's snapped near to the chain, there are three tiny holes drilled into it 120' degrees apart, it's snapped across where the holes are.any ideas?
