It's ok chaps, not the car, just the gearbox, well 5th gear to be precise.
OK so I have been pretty much everywhere in the NE today and on the way home I pulled out from a junction, all the way through the gears, into 5th started to accelerate, then hear a loud bang and lots of clicking doming from my gearbox, knocked it into neutral and could still hear clicking, but not as loud.
Tried 4th, car was driving/pulling perfectly fine, so knew it wasn't diff, although when in gear the clicking of metal was bad and could feel it through the gearstick, so badly, it was unscrewing the gearnob. Put it back into 5th and the grating was dreadful, but thought if it drives I can get it home, not too far to go.
However, when in 5th the car was driving and pulling but only just, the revs were rocketing, almost the same as if the clutch was slipping, if you get my meaning? Decided it was best to stop and get AA out, hope they cover gearboxes in their breakdown repair thingy-me-bob.
So I'm presuming 5th gear has just disintegrated inside the casing. Am I also correct in assuming that 5th gear is pretty much made from chocolate in the T5? Is there an upgraded part if my assumptions are correct?
Who do I get to sort it out? Gearboxman? The car is actually going to green Star Racing on Thursday for it's service so will get them to sort it.
ETA could I have done any damage to the other gears by driving it?

My Tuscans T5 box did the same. I took the box out myself, bought the new gear bits and had a local gearbox specialist rebuild it. Fitted it back in and it was perfect again.
The good thing is that the 5th gear is in a separate part of the casing from the rest of the gears, so you should hopefully not have damaged any more.
Cost me well over £300, but could have been a lot worse!

Well just spoken to Green Star and they are going to recondition the gearbox for a very reasonable price I would say. So good new on that front.
Sorry the hear that Al - been hearing good things about Greenstar...sure steve (NE TVRCC) sends his chimaera there..?I got my diff refurbed by alan voight - they advertise in the rear of sprint as transmission specialists - sounds like you have it covered but if you need another option?

Alright Pete, took it down to Green Star last year and they done a cracking job.
As I said, the car was going to then this weekend anyway to get sorted just means it will be away for a couple extra days, nothing serious as should still have it back for the following weekend anyway (as planned) just a few quid lighter.

Al, what is it with you North East Cerbera drivers and your 5th gear? Ross McDonnald has just needed a new 'box in his Cerb last month after a little spirited driving with an Audi RS6 ended with a firm change into 5th and a box of toothless cogs... for goodness sake, take it easy young man

5th gear on the T5 is an add-on on the end of the box outside the main casing, Tremec in their wisdom didn't put a proper bearing underneath the gear its just hardened steel on hardened steel with some oil film.
This is main reason I'd say use a decent gear oil ( like Castol SMX-S) which has some film strength as opposed to the ATF

I know Paul, was a bit of a full bore take off as I was on the A1, trying to get out in front of traffic. Only thing was I had a lovely crowd of onlookers as the southbound carriageway was blocked so gunning it past a line of cars then your gearbox exploding isn't exactly good for your reputation (especially in something that erm kind of stands out)
Steve it's disappointing as it was going for service on Thursday anyway so the gearbox oil would have been changed.
I think a good remedy would be to do all your accelerating in 1st to 4th and leave 5th purely for cruising or higher end speeds where less stress is on the cog.
