1000 Miles In 18 Months...A Problem?

I'm hopefully going to buy my new Cerb (S6) tommorow, but one thing which is slightly worrying me is a period of 18 months where the cars only done 1000 miles. It was rebuilt in November 2006, but didn't have the 1000 mile running in service with TVR Power until July 2009. Since July 2009 to now it's done around 8k miles and has had a lot of money spent (new clutch/2 services etc), so would this gap in use still be a concern, or should any problems have reared their head in the 8k miles/12 months since?

I dont really think I can respond with a 'it will be alright'....
Buying any car comes with potential for big bills, the risks with TVRs are greater.... Does the history of this car increase the risk? I think so - therefore you should tread carefully and maybe negotiate appropriately.

Cheers mate, I guess I thought that in 8k miles of driving, most things that were going to go wrong as a result of being stood would have gone wrong. The 1k service was done by TVR Power (who rebuilt it 18 months before), so I guess if anything was wrong at the 1k running in service they would have spotted it. Still waiting to hear back from Dom about that. The car in question is below, what value would you put on it?

I wouldn't let that 100 miles in 18 months worry me too much. It's been serviced by TVR Power since then, and as you say I'm sure thay would have put right any wrongs. It's a nice looking car - a Value?? Who can say, you can't value Cerbera's like other cars. I'm sure you could find a similar age car for £10 grand if you looked around, but would it be any good? A rebuilt engine, Ohlins, new clutch....all sounds good to me, a new set of Ohlins would set you back a few bob!

Phew, thats exactly the reply i wanted - im on the train on my way to get it! I think its got all the right bits on it to be worth a premium over other similar aged cars...Ill be sure to report back later! Cheers! Dom

Don't let your heart rule your head though. Ask lots of questions, check everything works - and check the emergency door releases as well.

I have a similar story, mine was registed Oct 2000, however according to the MOT certs it only covered 3000 miles between June 05 and November 07, then only 60 miles upto April 08. Before i bought it in Dec 09 it had done a further 10,000 and whilst i've had a few issues since buying it, they haven't been "showstoppers". Also, just out of interest, looking back through the car's history, excluding upgrades, a total of £9,200 has been spent on service/repairs since 7/1/05, less than a couple of grand per year, i'll be happy if it continues that way.

You never know what's happened with it being just a few miles between a period of time, it could be something as simple as the common fault of the speedo sensor broke and the owner may have left it until the next time it goes in for service etc, I have heard that one a few times, iffy weather can be another factor because after all it is England.

The original owner of mine didn't use it much, then Alan had it for a while, then I've almost doubled the mileage on it without issues.
