Hot starting issue

Hi all - well the Cerb starts fine when cold, but after a run today when everything was nice and hot, pressing the starter caused a very lacklustre performance - the engine barely turning over.

I assumed the battery was not charging, so left it a couple of hours at home then went back to move it into the garage armed with the starter pack, but the car span and started fine.

Is this a symptom of starter motor failure?

Check the earth strap first - engine block to chassis, could be a problem here.

Sometimes the solenoid on the starter motor can stick when its hot, but if yours is actually turning over and not just clicking then the solenoid is doing its job.
Was the car driving ok when it was hot before you tried to restart it?

When the starter motor on mine was on the way out it did behave in a similar way toy you described Andy.

It eventually got to the point where it behaved like that regardless of whether it was hot or cold.

Yep the car drives fine, and I bet if I go out now it'll spin like a top.

So is it a new starter required, or refurb the old?

Think they also refurb them. The above parts are all you probably need.

I replaced the starter gear/clutch on mine, which is the top link on the above post. It could be this that is failing but normally when these fail they squeal when the starter tries to spin.
I'd say its in need of a new starter, bite the bullet and buy a new one.
You can always have your old one tested and replace the relevant parts if its broken, then you have a spare. My local auto-electrician diagnosed the dodgy gear/clutch within seconds.
