Ciggy Lighter Wiring.

I've bought a new lighter assembly as my old one was missing. I've dug these three wires out from behind the ashtray - could someone tell me what each one is?

The Round connection fits into the Centre of the Cig lighter (Power)
The Square Black one onto the side (earth)
and the thing with the bulb on it clips onto the Cig lighter.

be carefull when putting bits back not to disconnect the master switch. if its like mine the wires are soldered on to the switch and not very well.....

Just be very very careful. I had a cigy lighter wireing fault and it ended up costing 5k to put right. Insurance thank god.

Thanks for the warning, I've read similar elsewhere - what exactly should I be being careful of, it looks like it's just plug in the connectors and off I go?

Cheap cig lighter over heats and sets fire to the dash! Good-bye another one!

If your only going to use it for power not smoking, than a possibility is a proper power socket like the ones fitted to BMW motorbikes.
Then just have an fused adapter to gig lighter plug.


I also had problems with the key switch, the whole thing fell to bits!!
Araldite soon sorted it, but on a £50k car it was shocking to fit such a cheap component.

I've used mine for powering my Sat nav for years without any problems at all, including 8hr day driving trips abroad.

Have the boot open when you play with the cigar socket lighting. Ob my car it's on the same fuse as the door/boot lock circuit, so if you blow it, you may struggle to open locks.
