Window Not Going Fully Up? Alarm Chirping?

Hey guys,

Just arrived at a nice posh hotel for my birthday and the cerbs playing up! The drivers side window wont go fully up, and if I try to set the alarm it chirps as if one of the doors is open. Any ideas?!

It's likely to be the reed switch in the bottom edge of the door - or possibly the magnet has come adrift form the door sill.

The siren's backup battery is on the way out, that's why it chirps. Contact Carl (phone number on www.tvruk.tv). I suspect your window will go all the way up if you disconnect and reconnect power to the door control box in the boot (double width one with four connectors, the power connector only has two leads (a red +ve and a black -ve) on it. Disconnect it, leave for thirty seconds, reconnect it.

Sounds like it thinks the door is still open.
Try shutting the door then open the other door and close the window from inside.

PS Mine chirps if you leave the a door or the boot open when I try and set it.

No - the alarm is most likely chirping because it thinks that the door is still open. It thinks this because the reed switch isn't being activated - either the switch is dead or the magnet is gone or it has worked loose and needs adjusting.

Dom - is the interior light staying on?

I stand corrected and if that's the cause then the indicators won't be doing the usual four flashes on arming the alarm either.

I think you should be able to tell form the number of chirps which sensor it thinks is not reset - but I can never remember which is which

Wow - thanks for all the quick replies! I'm pretty sure it's chirping because it thinks a door is still open - will check if the interior light is staying on and let you know! Will report back!

Anyone tell me where the switch is in the door? Presuming it works on magnets because there is no traditional plunger type switch.

I ask because I had similar, window wouldn't go all the way up and sometimes the interior lights would stay on. Although they did go out after a mile or two.

Just about to go out for dinner so will check the lights on the way (and switch them off if they're on!) but coming to think of it I went for a drive with my brother earlier, and the interior lights wouldnt go off despite us checking all the doors were properly shut. Then on the way home we had the windows fully open on both sides, and whilst driving they both suddenly went all the way up! Guess this may help someone diagnose and is probably linked!! What would we (I) do without this forum?!

Well...I got into the car from the passenger side (drivers window is the one which wouldnt go up)...shut the door, lights went off, the drivers window went up as if nothing was wrong (sure it wouldnt before)...got out, shut the door, alarm set as normal and all seems fine! Sure there's something wrong though and i guess it's linked to what happened this afternoon with the interior lights not going off and then the windows both going up whilst driving along etc - any ideas as to what I should be checking?

Almost certainly a grotty connector to the reed switch in the door. Door panel off (various allen screws round the edge) and have a rummage inside. If you trace back from the reed switch in the bottom edge of the door you will probably find corroded connectors. Either clean or replace them and that should fix your problem.

The switch is on the bottom edge of the door towards the rear, about where the door frame starts to curve up. If you look under the door you will see a metal plate with what looks like a flat ended screw thread sticking out of it - that is the end of the reed switch assembly. The magnet that activates it is in the door sill in car body.

Right, I've had a good look around the doors, to try and find the reed switch. Is it the small metal plate held in by two nuts? If so, the one on the drivers door is shiny and clean but the one on the passenger door is very corroded - is it just a case of undoing the nuts, cleaning it up and replacing it? Weird that it's the one on the passenger door that is corroded when it was the drivers window that wouldnt go up though, any ideas?

It is unlikely to be corrosion on the reed switch its self - it will probably be in the wiring connectors hidden inside the door. You will need to take the door card off to get to them.

Thanks for all the help - I've just been out and removed the door card. Traced the reed switch wires back to the connectors, which fell apart as I touched them - they hadn't properly clicked together, so I've plugged them in properly and taped/cable tied them. Hopefully that's fixed it all!

Glad you got a result.

I recently got so sick of the crappy connectors in the doors that I replaced the lot with AMP waterproof ones which should hopefully be a permanent fix!
