ECU Connection

Hi all, I know this has been covered in previous threads, but I really need help with connecting my laptop to the ecu. It's a 1998 4.5 V8 with the original ECU. I can't seem to get any connection to it at all, I've used the new and old software, checked and checked again the procedure for connection but I just can't seem to do it?

Any help is much apprciated!!

Are you using a USB to serial adapter? If so it needs to be set to COM1 in the windows device manager.
Is the immobiliser off and ignition on (so the fuel pump is running)?
