tyre size ?

hi all just after a bit of feedback really i just bought some spiders and im not sure what size tyres to put on the front ie 225/35 or 235/35 or even 225/40 235/40 i would like to put 235/40 on as i think 225 are to small for an 8" rim and with 40 profile what do you guys think

225/35/18 on mine and they don't look quite right, however i think MikeinSheffield currently runs 235's and is having "issues", apologies Mike if i'm wrong.

I think the 35s look better than the 40s. But i think the 40s have a bit more give in them for a better ride.

Anything wider than a 225 will potentially tramline on any road surface that's not glassy-smooth.

Whilst on the subject, what sort of pressures do you guys use on the road with 18" spiders?

I run 225/35 at the front and 24 psi all round (after several years of experimenting). I don't like the fronts much on spiders, and changed to SP12s which are much better on the same size of tyre. I think the slightly narrower wheel on the SPs allows the 35 profile to work better.

Ive got 235 35 on mine and it is hard work on very poor roads it tram lines and doesnt soak up the bumps but on smoother A roads it handles much better As for tyre pressures I would start with 24 all round.

I've just put a set of spiders on mine, tyres are 225/35/18 and 255/35/18, both front and rear are Tuscan fronts and set at 24PSI.
I can honestly say its made the car very twitchy and it now requires more driver input to keep in a straight line, definitely a worse ride.

Sorry forgot to say I was running 17" RL7's with 225/40/17 and 255/40/17.

I think you may be right and that a full set up is needed, the RL7's may have been masking a problem?

I ran with the 225/35/18 for the previous approx 9K miles (Goodyear Eagle F1s - fitted to the car when I bought it) and had been discussing larger sizes with Russell at RaceProved and Gazzab. Russell recommended the 235/35's as it gives a slightly wider front contact patch and doesn't "stretch" the tyre to the rims like the 225s do (it looked like the 225s tyre was slightly narrower than the rim if you get what I mean) and could provide a more positive turn-in, also may slightly help protect the rims from risk of kerbing damage.

I wanted to stick with Goodyear Eagle F1s and bought a full set of the asymetric version of the F1s (which I rate as a good all round road tyre in all weathers).

However, I didn't find them in the 235/35 size and got the 235/40 size.

There is some slight sounds of catching when turning to full lock at low speeds - but nothing "too serious".

I have NOT noticed any tendency to tramline with the larger size - however this may be due to the fact that I got RaceProved to do a full geometry check and set up when the tyres were fitted.

Due to "running in" a new gearbox I've not taken the car out for a really quick drive yet, but happy with how it feels with some "fairly spirited" driving. However - I'm not sure that any fine differences in turn-in would necessarily be detected on the road - might need to take it on track for that (hmmmmmm, now that sounds like a good excuse! )

One of the main advantages I was after on the road though was to improve the ride quality, with the slightly increased depth of the sidewall due to the increased profile. Not sure if it's just "placebo effect" but it seems to have made a slight improvement (particularly as I frequently drive on poor road surfaces in Derbyshire / Peak District).

225/35 (oem) = skinny, 225/40 = ok, 235/40 = tight fit

just to update i have fitted 235/40/18 on rims with ET42 offset i fitted steering lock stops and it all works fine ,no rubbing and no tram lineing but there is not alot of room (thighter than an eskimo's ballbag infact) looks fantastic IMO as they fill the arches
