Strange starting issue

Without boring you all with the journey to where I am now, here is a resume.
New starter motor fitted
New Red Top battery. tested working fine.
New live feed to starter
Negative feed installed direct from battery to starter motor

This is what happens.
With the battery fresh from the charger, starts with no hesitation - but only 4 times, then the solenoid clicks, but starter does not turn.

Connect the solenoid feed diect to live from battery, starts perfectly!

Any ideas?

ETA, before fitting the new starter, this problem was not an issue

Sounds like a duff starter motor to me.

Id get another and see if the problem remains

Sounds like the starter relay is U/S.

Maybe the contacts just need cleaning up?

i had/have the same problem with mine. after searching on here a bit it seems a common one. apparently the feed to solonoid passes through several contacts and plug connections and so by the time it reaches the solonoid its down to about 10v which is not enough to close the starter connection. i had the garage wire in a feed straight from the battery through a new relay to the solonoid operated by another button that a use when the original one decides it doesnt wont to work.

Had the same with brand new one from racing green, they swapped it and it was fine. Guess some solenoids are fussy with power supply.
