Exhaust Advice 4.2AJP

When i start the car from cold the exhaust only seems to be smoking from one pipe (RHS) and the car seems to be holding back a bit on power, I think the exhaust is blocked somewhere, the car seems to still have the standard system on it and fancy upgrading it anyway.

Do you think this is likely to be just the back box blocked or possibly at the cats?

Can anyone recommend a system for the car? (looking around on the internet i can only really see JP/ACT systems available) i want the proper tvr sound but i don't want it really loud - i am happy enough to change the entire system inc the cats, but from reading on here that is likley to be hard to live with from a noise point of view.

Any advice??

Doubt the exhaust is blocked, more likely that the car is not set up correctly. Remember that the engine is like two 4 cylinder units side by side and as such have independent sensors for throttle position and the such, if they are not set correctly it is possible to have one side working better than the other.

If you are OK with cars to can plug a laptop into the ECU and get the details of how every thing is set or if you are not sure it would be worth getting the car to a tuner pref with a rolloing road and get it set up properly, this will cost less than a new exhaust and deliver more power as the car will be running properly after, if you still lwant to change the exhaust after then ACT is a good option.

Mine did this, one cat had collapsed. That cat used to rattle as well.

Ditto for me too!

Right hand pipe steams nice and early after start up

Left hand pipe very little if any.

N/S cat has screws in it to stop it rattling! But is rattling like a gud un

Thanks for the advice so far.

I am intending to book the car to get serviced and checked over anyway so i will look into any problems with the engine.

Does anyone know the best place to buy the diagnostic plug for my laptop - or does anyone have intructions on how to make one? i have already downloaded the software.

I have been looking into the different JP exhaust options from ACT and i am thinking of getting the "SJ10C Cerbera big bore full system" this seems to replace the cats but still give you silencers so hopefully it shouldn't be to stupit loud!

Has anyone got one of these fitted? or any thoughts on it.

If your ECU has a serial port connection inside it (take the cover off and have a look) then a bog standard Serial port cable from PC World will do the job. (Plus a USB Serial adapter if your Laptop has no serial port)

Hi Russ, where have you been hiding? Are you well? hows the Cerb?



Edit: blocked cats are a possibility, a Ph'ers car made 190bhp on its first dyno run due to blocked cats after never feeling too great... it was returned to him with a remap, decatted and given a general tune up by TrackCarSolutions with 391bhp years ago... I bet the drive back was interesting!!

It wont take long to have a look at the cats, if you're going for a full custom system (recommended, search for various threads on it) - just ask them to silence the hell out of it! Thats what we might do next due to circuit noise regs etc etc...

Alright thanks Ben. It still has it's regular visits to Junction 3 & It's booked in for the next, and it's first, Vmax.

Seven years of my backside & various leaks have took it's toll on the interior, so I think A refurb is next on my list

ACT do a quiet system, plus you can replace the cats with inline silencers as well. Decatted my system is 106db, down to 96db with the trackday cans added.

Things are ok, Cerbs going fine (as always, 94k+ now!) but we're thinking of moving on to a T350/Sagaris as we're at a bit of a turning point with the car. We could go absolutely mad with the Cerberas development, but I'd feel guilty at the possibility of ruining such a great car - or go for the TVR more suited to hillclimbs/sprints in the first place and work from there... something we're less attached to.

Who knows! Its just come back from a service/MOT though and as Dads other car (leccy Smart) has broken, it suddenly makes us think otherwise again... Vmax sounds good, let us know when it is - I used to go to them regularly in the early days - Cerbs tend to go suprisingly well there.
