Nearly Cerb owner

Hi
It looks as if i will be a Cerb owner in the coming weeks its a 99 4.2 and has a long history and has been owned by a TVR Indy for 6-7 years so seems to be in good fetle.

Just have a few questions if that is ok.

What engine oil does the 4.2 AJP use also the diff oil and Gear box?

What is the rev range?

What torque do they make?

It also has a bonnet which i have only seen on few cerbs before can anyone tell me about it is it a tvr bonnet or a mod done to it?



I will be coming from a Chimaera after 3 years so have done my home work on them just a few little bits and bobs i still need to know.

Any help would be great thanks.

Congratulations!
Generally people use the thicker Mobil 1.
The bonnet is after market so I guess someone once had an accident or had over heating issues.
The lights at the front are also modified per the year 2000/1 cars.

Yeah the car has been in a bump hence the changes but it does not bother me as it was only a cat D like my current chim.

I have been out for a run in it last weekend, it is a local car to me and i like it alot.

I would love a set of spiders on it at some point but i wont get ahead of myself just yet.

Looks to be same as mine!

PS - I like the wheels! Spiders look great but so delicate.

One of the big dealers told me he's never seen a set of round spiders!

It is Crystal Verde. The chap that owns the car just now has had 8 tvrs and recons this is the most planted one he has had,I bet the 17" wheels with a bit more of a profile will help make it a better ride too, But spiders do look awsome, Catch 22 i guess round wheels or looks

Many years ago,there was a company called Zertec selling those bonnets. The company folded some years back.

I have long had this suspicion that a higher profile and a bit narrower smaller wheels would make a big improvement in "Every Day" ride comfort and drive-ability.

Most people want to go for wider lower profile for looks and I too like that look of wide wheels.

I do like the bonnet to be honest, would like to see it but a bit far unless your taking it to NEC Classic Car show next weekend?

Bonnet lift/wobble on mine is the only bit that annoys me about the car.

Good luck with it if you do get it, you won't be disappointed!

But are they all still round? It's just I was told there were fairly soft compared to RL's.

I have one slightly out-of-round RL, so even they can be affected by our superb roads.

Although at 150+ I can't tell, what with with all the Engine noise and general shaking going on!

Great cars aren't they!

No i wont be heading down Hope its a good one for you, i wont get the keys for a good couple of weeks at least as its getting a fresh MOT and a little gear box snag sorted before i get it and the plates swaped over to but cant wait.

I am still unsure on the bonnet will have to live with the car first and see i dont dislike it just not sure if it goes with the cars lines or not???

Mate they could be oblong for all i know, but they still look good and yes they are great cars

Well thats me got it now only had it out once and dont really fancy taking it out too much this time of year till is warm and dry again so i can get a feel for it, few little jobs to do over winter and give it a service so roll on some good weather haha.

Some answers:
What engine oil does the 4.2 AJP use
I use Silkolene Pro S 10W 50 on the recomendations of Opie Oils.

What is the rev range?
depends on how much you want to stress your engine. There's a rev limiter/beeper that comes in around 7200 revs and starts beeping furiously as you approach 8K revs. Somewhere just over 7k infrequently should be ok.

What torque do they make?
Depends on what work has been done/how good the engine is. Mine was making 343bhp and round 300 ft/lbs torque as standard from the factory and 12 years old, but Jules has waved his magic wand over it and it's making much more now. Can't remember offhand but I'll look it up when I'm at home.

As for tyres. I'm one that thinks 17" wheels and 40 profile tyres not only look right but give a better ride as well. Controversial I know as a lot like 18" wheels and 35 profile tyres.

Cheers for that guys i have lots of questions but il use the search funtion for most of the ones that must get asked often, but have a couple for now.

What is the narrowest tyres you can run all round I have never been a fan of to wide a tyre as it does not let water out very well(and live in Scotland) was thinking 235 on the rear and 225 front( if i can get them) or even 235 all round on a 17/40 wheel? Opinions welcome on this set up please
The car has cheapish tyres on it just now and want to get some good year eagles on as I love them and its the only part of the car i want to be in contact with the tarmac.

Second where is the ECU located as I want to get the diagnostics working for the future. What do I need just a 9 pin serial and for my net book a usb-serial adaptor?

255 rear and 225 front is ok - I wouldnt want to go much narrower on the rear as you will lose traction too easily.
ECU is by the feet of the passenger. Pull carpet back from the top, its stuck to a solid section that pulls away with it. The ECU silver box then needs unscrewing to access the socket.

Good to see a Cerb staying in Scotland, I saw this car when I was getting my car serviced in Blackpool, It lookks great and Im sure having belonged to the Indie who serviced my car it will have been well looked after. Good luck with it and take it easy in this weather as they can lose traction very easily.
