Noticed that the oil pressure on my 4.5 is starting to fluctuate more than I remember.

When cold it reads around 60psi but this settles to bang on 50 when warm at anything above 2000rpm. When the car idles when warm however it drops way down to a tad over 30psi.

Is this the norm or is the the start of something expensive?

Try a simple thing first such as changing the oil pressure relief spring as per this thread..www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=62732&f=6&h=0

I changed mine and immediately improved the oil pressure readings both hot and cold, all for the sake of a £4 spring!

Your current readings sound alright to me. Mine reads approximately 42psi when properly warmed up (50 odd when cold). It does drop to 30's when stuck in traffic for a reasonable period.

Tim (arcbeer) is right, it does sound correct...although mines a 4.2. The figures can vary from car to car though, and changing the spring should help to get a 'truer' reading.
